We have milled nearly all of the trees I have saved over the past two years. What's left is too big to fit through the #woodmizer. Here is the last Osage log that I think will make a wonderful deck on a future #treehouse. Can't wait to get to creating. #canopycrew #urbantimber #sawmill #treehousebuilders #customtreehouse #rrg #treehousevillage
These tunnels are the aftermath of the emerald ash borer. If all the ash trees in the east have to die, at least let a few live again as #treehouses. #eab #urbantimber #treeservice #canopycrew #ash #invasivespecies
What is Reclaimed Wood?
Reclaimed wood can be found in different types depending on the source. Old barns, farm houses and commercial buildings are common sources for reclaimed wood that provides a unique rustic design look. Other sources of reclaimed wood are sunken logs from lakes and rivers or urban timber, logs sourced by localized arborist who are hired to remove trees in urban areas.

Barn wood is one of the most common types of reclaimed wood. Over the years many barns have been burned down or buried and now an industry has developed for barn wood to be recycled and given a new life. Barns yield a variety of types, sizes and species of reclaimed wood. Boards that are ¾” thick to 2” thick are processed and manufactured into a variety of clean or rustic products such as paneling and furniture.

Commercial buildings offer large structural beams and joist that can be processed into a variety of products such as wide plank flooring. Farm houses can be the most work to deconstruct for the amount lumber that can be reclaimed and reprocessed.

Sunken logs are a type of reclaimed wood that is expensive to reclaim, process and purchase. Logs harvested from the forest were chained together and floated down rivers to saw mills were they were sawn into beams and boards. Along the way logs would break loose from the chains and end up sinking to the bottom of the rivers. Divers and large pontoon boats work to locate and reclaim the logs. The recovered logs are then sawn up, dried and made into a variety of unique products.

Urban timber also has its own unique character in dimension or specie. Trees in urban areas are removed for a variety of reasons. Urban timber companies who are or work with local arborist can be found throughout the country. Companies will mill the trees into unique slabs retaining the live edges and natural shape. Urban Timber logs are most likely not high grade logs and have a unique characteristics of knots, grain, size and live edges that create value. All slabs need to air dry for a period of time before being kiln dried and manufactured into finished products.
