Unlike the last guy, who had lots of little stones that filled the bladder and urethra, this dog had just one HUGE stone lodged in his urethra. We don’t even know how it got that far down, it was so big. We removed it via a urethrostomy.
As I said before, urinary blockages are true medical emergencies, because if they’re not corrected quickly, it will be fatal (usually in <24-48 hrs if the urethra is completely blocked).
The nurse is teaching a client with urinary calculi about diet. Which comment by the client is an indication that the nurse needs to reinforce previous teaching?
a) “Dairy products may cause more stones to develop in the future.”
b) “I should drink cranberry juice and water daily.”
c) “Strenuous exercise will make bones lose their calcium, and I will have more stones.”
d) “I should not allow myself to get dehydrated while working in the hot sun.”
Association Between Bladder Pain Syndrome/Interstitial Cystitis (BPS/IC) & Urinary Calculi: A previous study,"reported an association between BPS/IC and urinary calculi (UC), . . ". In this study,"BPS/IC was found to be significantly associated with prior UC regardless of stone location. . . " (Keller et al.)
