I haven’t watched the mandolorian yet, but what can they possibly do now that they opened the baby yoda pandoras box? Like there’s no other option but to have the mandolorian be baby yodas guardian for however long the shows on for, right? And don’t give me that bullshit about how interesting or how the mandolorian can carry the show himself cause people are invested in him now, cause no, no they’re not. Nobody cares about boba fette as much as people like to think people care about boba fette, and he’s not even boba fette. And once you introduce a character like baby fucking yoda you can’t get rid of a character that’s that huge, he’s the urkle of the Star Wars universe. The show is completely dwarfed by his presence, and I haven’t even watched it yet.

No supporting actor has every saved a show? Henry Winkler is why Happy Days was on the air as long as it was, so much so they wanted to rename it Fonzie's Happy Days, Jaleel White's Urkel, a fourth billed character became only reason why people watched Family Matters, and Michael Emerson from LOST is credited for giving the show new life and why people stuck with the show. While I don't think Misha did that for SPN don't say it doesn't happen, it makes you look stupid.

Fonzie is why the term “jump the shark” exist and indicative of a decline in quality. “A defining moment when you know from now on… it’s all downhill…it will never be the same.”  

So if Fonzie is the harbringer of declining quality why did the show continue for seven more seasons after the shark stunt?  Because it wasn’t Fonzie who “saved” Happy Days from cancellation, it was the declining quality itself that saved the show.

Happy Day’s rating was sinking in it’s second season so in order for Garry Marshall to save his show he destroyed almost everything he originally set out to create, Happy Days went from a charming little single-camera comedy about the trials of nuanced characters growing up during the nostelgic ‘50s and turned itno a loud, gimmicky (aliens!), kid-friendly, multi-camera comedy.  And it worked.  Similar rework was done to Family Matters, it went from a gentle comedy to a cartoonish comedy.

When Urkle was just a side character in the first three seasons Family Matters was doing fine.  But when they started focusing more on Urkle and getting rid of characters and adding unnecessary characters to revolve around Steve, the show went down the tubes.  The final straw that killed Family Matters was Steven transforming into Steffen, and Steve created series of unbelieable inventions, making the show too cartoonish even for Urkle fans.  

So the characters you cited are not example of a single supporting character saving their shows, just the opposite, the over exposure of those characters ultimately killed the show.  Lost never entirely switched focus to Emerson.   When Ron Howard left the show did become “Fonzie’s Happy Days”, it lasted half the time when Ron was the lead character on the show, it would have died sooner but the show still had several beloved and likeable characters to rely on.  Most shows get canceled one or two years after they lose their lead characters (credit).  A Different World is the exception, they had 5 more seasons when they lost their lead after just one season.

Even you don’t believe Misha saved SPN from cancellation.
