Why did you choose to work in a non-profit spray/neuter clinic ?
A few reasons. I’ve been passionate about spay/neuter ever since I was a kid and learned the disheartening stats about animal homelessness and euthanasia. It was very distressing to me knowing those stats but watching my neighbors just let their animals breed out of control. So even as a kid I was trying to educate folks about that. Part of my vet science elective in high school required volunteering/shadowing with a local vet; I chose one of the spay/neuter clinics and LOVED it.
Also, I grew up in a family that struggled to pay the vet bills, so I can really relate with clients who can’t afford $500 (more than most people around here make in two weeks!) for a cat neuter, you know? We also have a vaccine clinic so all animals in our area can at least get a minimal level of vet care. Helping animals who otherwise wouldn’t see the inside of a vet clinic, except maybe a shelter’s euthanasia room, is very, very important to me.
And lastly, I’m Catholic Christian, and called to serve people less fortunate than myself. Animals and their health impact their people. For example, the benefits of the human-animal bond are well-documented, as are the effects of preventable zoonotic diseases. So this is my little way of using my gifts to help the poor and serve my God :]
