Brownies are helpful house spirits from British mythology. They are described as small and wizened, identifiable by their brown hood.
Brownies inhabit houses and perform small jobs in exchange for food. They are particularly fond of porridge. They are shy, and prefer to do their chores at night, and away from prying eyes. If the owner of the house mistreats a brownie, it will leave the home.
Tales say that every manor house had a brownie, and a chair would be left in the kitchen for them.
