OutPost Naponsett Nibi (“that place there where water crosses”) owns, preserves, and amplifies Mattapan, MA as ‘a good place to be’ -- to make that the cultural marker for our community.

OutPost Naponsett Nibi is an arts-driven network creating collaborative outdoor space for artistic play, creative expression, social activism and civic engagement.   Our name, Naponsett Nibi, pays homage to the Neponset River as an under-appreciated cultural asset, affirming its beauty, its history, and the critical relationship between the river’s health and community resilience here in Mattapan, MA.   Always/Already drawing inspiration from our indigenous and African ancestors, our lead artists are committed to bringing their studio, social, and civic praxes to bear on the collaborative work/play that occurs here.    

Outpost Naponsett Nibi is a transit-oriented, 5K square-foot open-air art space located at 7 Riverbank Place in Mattapan, MA.  It is a seasonal venue for live arts and creative expression focused on building community through the arts.  All are welcome.

It was an icy morning, thin sheets freshly spidered after recent melt, in Burlington, Vermont, the day the president was supposed to address our country in his state of the union speach. Down college, main, and loomis people tiptoed avoiding the crystalline frozen water. On St. Paul resident leader David moved with care as he walked his dog sophie, reminding each neighbor he passed to come to the community room that evening. The people moved tenderly that mundane Tuesday, and somewhere in DC the president prepared his speach. This evening instead of listening to one ego share his thoughts on the "state of the union" I will join my neighbors in a community room, & in a bar, to hear about their moments of belonging- or feelings of unbelonging- in their community. A week from tomorrow the president will give his state of the union, but the #USDAC invites you to share your own take on the state of the union, through the lens of your community. Busy, exciting day at #Nashville 's #womensmarch2018! I started off helping to co-facilitate a #usdac #storycircle, creating a safe listening space to talk about our senses of belonging and dis-belonging in feminism/activism, and ways we can help create a more intersectional sense of belonging and action. It turns out that there are many ways one might feel like they disbelong...but to feel belonging was often as simple as feeling accepted, valued, and heard. As part of our "reporting out" process, we asked participants - in the session, the rally, and throughout the March - to write down actions that they experienced that helped them feel a sense of #belonging. So many friends and strangers (who are really just new friends!) alike contributed memories like "sharing food," "being welcomed," "having space made for me," and "listened to." We unified these strips of words on seedpaper into a linking chain - stronger together! - and after the #womensmarch, we liberated the strips and buried the #seedpaper, planting seeds for the future on Capitol Hill. ...Sometimes it's worth getting your hands a little dirty to make the world around you a little more beautiful :) 🌺🌼🌸🌼🌺 (at Nashville, Tennessee)

These are some of the closing thoughts of the "Creativity and Cultural Organizing" workshop held in the Decker Tower Community room. The room was full with energy and people from different walks of life, backgrounds, age interests, and needs, but when it came time to share stories about home, we all shared a vulnerable part of ourselves which leveled the playing field. Organizers and artists came together to talk about how we can strengthen our community through arts and culture, bridging communities within our city/ state. We will meet again, and this time we want you there too. Feeling humbled and joyous, lets keep up the momentum.
