Bloodswaps, etc.: A Mathematical Analysis

A while ago, I saw a post positing that the possible number of bloodswaps/nameswaps is around 1,200. 32 characters (including dancestors) times 18 last names times 2 (each swap could be a human or a troll) gives a result of 1,152 swaps. It certainly seems like a reasonable figure. But there are two glaring inaccuracies with this method:

It counts canon name pairs (ex. John Egbert or Rufioh Nitram).

Last names don’t have to be tied strictly to blood colors; Dirk Maryam, for instance, doesn’t have to be a jadeblood.

To correct these errors and shed some light on the mathematical truth of the matter, I decided to do the calculations myself. Without further ado, I present: How Many Bloodswaps Are There, Really?

For starters, we're going to determine how many swaps are possible for each troll. Let’s take a look at the possibilities for, say, Aradia:

Megido, Nitram, Captor, Vantas, Leijon, Maryam, Pyrope, Serket, Zahhak, Makara, Ampora, Peixes, Egbert, Crocker, Lalonde (Roseways), Lalonde (Roxyways), Strider (Daveways), Strider (Dirkways), Harley, English

That’s certainly a lot! You’ll notice that I put Lalonde and Strider twice; once for each of the respective kids. This is because Aradia Lalonde Roseways will lead to a different result personality-wise than Aradia Lalonde Roxyways; the same goes for the Striders. Anyway, there are 20 last names present. That nice round number should make for (mostly) easy math.

First, how many human swaps does Aradia have? That one’s easy. Humans don’t have blood color variations, so it’s just 20. Megido is still valid because Aradia Megido isn’t usually a human. Now for the harder part: trolls. We’ll start by seeing how many bloodswaps Aradia Megido can have. In canon, Aradia’s blood color is rust (though the color doesn’t really matter), which leaves 12 other blood colors. Yes, 12: don’t forget that non-mutant limebloods are still a thing. So 12 for Megido. As for the rest of the last names, each of them have 13 possible colors (since Aradia Zahhak with rust blood, for example, isn’t a canon permutation). 19 times 13 yields 247. Adding all those together: 20 + 12 + 247 = 279. 279 is what we’ll call the “Troll Number”. It’s how many swaps are possible for each troll. Even Karkat and Kankri have this same number, because they could be swapped to non-mutant limebloods. We’ll remember this for later. For now, let’s look for the Human Number.

I won’t bother listing them all, but John could have the same selection of 20 last names: 12 troll and 8 human. (Again, John Strider Daveways would be a different person than John Strider Dirkways.) This time, we’ll start with trolls, since the math is simpler: 20 names times 13 blood colors is 260. Humans are actually also easy; thanks, humans! With no blood color variations, John could have any of the 19 last names that aren’t his. Adding once again: 260 + 19 = 279. Woah! As it turns out, the Human and Troll Numbers are the same!  That’ll make life a little easier. Honestly, the fact that the numbers are the same was definitely something I could’ve predicted-- I could have pretended that no names/colors were “forbidden”, used easier math to find that number, and then subtracted 1 to represent the one name/color combo that’s “taken”-- but I’m known for the accuracy of my results, not the efficiency of my process.

Now for the final count. 12 beta trolls plus 12 dancestors plus 8 humans makes 32 total characters that can be swapped. The multiplication would be messy, but that’s what my calculator and I are here for:

32 * 279 = 8,928

There we have it. Counting all the beta trolls, dancestors, and kids, there are eight thousand nine hundred twenty-eight possible bloodswaps/nameswaps. A little more than 1,200, isn’t it? I don’t know how you might use this information, but now you have it! It really is unfortunate that there aren’t any more characters to swap. Nine thousand is almost within reach...

Unless, of course, you want to count cherubs.

Adding cherubs isn’t actually very difficult. There are two cherubs, Calliope and Caliborn, and since there are no “forbidden” (canon) last names/blood colors for them, the Cherub Number is just 20 times 13 trolls (260) plus 20 humans-- 280. 280 times 2 cherubs makes 560 cherub-as-troll/human swaps. For the opposite, it’s equally easy, actually. 32 trolls/humans times 2 possible cherub alignments makes 64 troll/human-as-cherub swaps.

Added together, that’s 624 additional swaps from adding cherubs to the mix. Combining all our totals gives us 9,552 total bloodswaps/nameswaps with cherubs included. Over nine thousand achieved!

Baithin: Actually pretty much ready for Stormblood. Both Bard and Scholar are capable of doing EX roulette and Dun Scaith so I just gotta gear up a bit more. Azionne: Gear up BLM a tiny bit more. WAR is at 54, just need to get to 60 and minimum ilvl 235. Edge: MNK is at 53, just gotta level to 60 and also gear up to 235. NIN is done and ready to level MSQ first once Stormblood hits. Granny: Gear up WHM a tiny bit. Summoner is at 47, want to level to 60 and gear up. Gogo: Catch up on MSQ, currently at 3.4! Once he's done I am just gonna farm A4S until I get the gobwalker mount and then he'll be ready. Lini: Level 59 PLD, so close to 60 and then she can catch up on MSQ too. I will try to gear her up and then level DRK (which is only at 33) so I'm gonna try to do it in time but not expecting to. Siz'ir: Currently level 40 NIN. Gonna level him to 50 and then stop. Just want him to be a SAM for Stormblood. So he won't be long. Yue: Currently 54 DRG. Gonna try to finish MSQ and then level AST to 60 as well, which is currently 50.
