QR Codes: why?

While useful in some situations, the importance some people place on QR codes always seemed kinda misguided to me. My impression was that apart from a few die-hard folks excited about downloading an app to read QR codes (look! It's like magic!) almost nobody uses them. Apparently research bears this out. And businesses don't seem to understand how to use QR codes. Using them instead of your URL has got to be the dumbest reason. Chances are your customer understands what a website is. Are you sure they know about QR codes? Since people will use their smartphones to read the code, this is especially silly if your site is not optmized for a mobile user. You just creating a recipe for frustration. If I've got your business card do I really need a QR code that just gives me the same d*mn information? It's about creating value people. How about using an updateable QR code and posting special offers and events so everytime I scan it is new and useful information? Businesses need to think this thru before randomly deploying QR codes and the like. This article from Meme Burn does a great job of summing it up better than I can. Yes there are plenty of shiny new tools in the pr and marketing specialist's toolbox but before plunging ahead there is no substitute for the old school virtue of planning.
