Please.
Her entire life had been a nightmare for as long as Prudence could remember. Maybe not from the moment she was born, but all she could actually remember was her family looking at her like she was nothing more than a disappointment they were forced to hold onto. Her parents needed to keep the family together and safe, putting on the perfect image for the world to see. At some point, they even needed to hire someone to make sure Prudence was kept in line and someone to keep her safe from everyone, including herself.
However, she still managed to keep Ben on his toes at times. She wouldn't do anything that would actually get him in trouble, but that didn't mean she would completely follow the list of rules that had been beaten into her over the years. Prudence could slip free from him on occasion and still make sure he kept his job.
After all, there wasn't a single other person who actually gave a damn about her.
“Where were you?”
Prudence nearly jumped when she sneaked back into her bedroom and shut the door behind her, turning on the light the moment she heard the question and looking across the room to see Ben waiting for her. If she was being honest, feeling the rush that caused her heart to race like that made her feel alive for the first time in a very long time.
“You scared the shit out of me,” she spoke around a laugh while tossing her purse onto her bed. Eyes trailed back over to see Benjamin's arms crossed over his chest and a look on his face that seemed to be a mixture of disappointment and worry. “Relax. I'm fine.”
“Are you drunk?”
Was she? Pru wasn't slurring her words, could walk straight as ever, and there wasn't any other reason he would think she might be. Did she have a drink? Absolutely, but one shot wouldn't get her drunk. So, why the hell would he think she was drunk? Prudence watched him carefully, seeing how he examined her and that's when she knew. Her eyes. They were still red and puffy. She'd had one drink after she cried her eyes out from another fight with her parents.
“No,” she finally replied with a shake of her head before walking across the room to stand in front of him, letting herself force a smile as she tilted her head. “Would you finally do something if I was?”
“Jesus, Pru.”
The look of worry on his face faded away completely and she started to panic. Her stomach turned at the thought of Ben only feeling disappointment for her like everyone else. It was only a matter of time before he couldn't stand her either. The one person who actually seemed to care about her would be nothing more than a man forced to be there for a job.
Don't hate me. Please. I need you.
“I'm not drunk, okay? Would you finally do something if you knew I wasn't?” The way he still looked at her with disappointment told Pru everything she didn't want to hear. It was as if he didn't believe her, as if he didn't know how to believe anything she might say. Maybe she deserved that for sneaking out, but he had to know why she needed to get away. “Fuck you,” she muttered with her chest tightening, knowing she could somehow cry for hours all over again. “I was crying, you asshole. Mom and dad weren't happy and didn't hold back again. I went out and had one fucking drink because I didn't want to feel like shit.” Or maybe she went out to drink so she could finally feel something.
Either way, it didn't matter and Pru only shook her head before turning around to walk away from Benjamin. Before she got the chance, a hand wrapped around her arm to stop her, then her back was pressed against the nearby wall. Prudence never got the chance to even think about what was happening before he was kissing her. His soft lips pressed against hers, his firm body pressed against hers, his gentle hands gripping at her hips to keep her steady. Prudence did everything to hold onto this moment, her own fingers even gripping at his shoulders to keep him there until she couldn't breathe and Ben forced himself back.
“Don't leave without me again, okay?”
All the disappointment was gone from his face with only care and concern taking over. A shaky breath passed her lips as she looked up at him and nodded her head in agreement. There might only be one person who gave a damn about her, but that one person being Ben was all she needed.
