Background: Late in the year they picked up a new first officer Leslie Wong at Campagna Station in the Solarion system, replacing one that had to go on extended leave. Their mission was standard Cardassian border patrol along the system. They found a Cardassian science vessel, trailing around the outermost planet, on their side of the border. When their orbit drifted into Federation space, Jellico ordered them to withdraw. Gul Zarkat jumped the gun, and went straight for the civilian space station. Their weapons were more powerful than previously thought but Cairo disabled them without too much trouble. Zarkat surrendered and an inventory of their cargo holds showed they were planning to use Campagna station for research into metagenic weapons.

This photo was taken at Vicksburg and shows the paddles of the USS Cairo - an early Union ironclad. She was sunk in December of 1862, by remotely detonated mine, whilst taking part in the action at Haines Bluff. Her remains can be seen at the Vicksburg National Military Park.

Inside the USS Cairo in Vicksburg, Mississippi. This shows the side guns, steam boiler, and paddlewheel. The original wood and restored wood are obvious. The metal parts like cannons and boiler are original, preserved in the oxygen free mud at the bottom of the river. This was a Union gunboat that patrolled and was sunk on the Mississippi river.

Appeared in Star Trek: DS9′s “The Maquis: Soldiers of Peace” from Malibu Comics. In TNG’s “Chain of Command” the Cairo was Jellico’s ship before he took command of the Enterprise.
