Obamacare Replacement And "The Second Kick Of The Mule"
Obamacare Replacement And “The Second Kick Of The Mule”
Most of the time, when Republicans tackle issues in education, it’s like a pig farmer getting involved in catering a bar mitzvah dinner or Maker’s Mark providing beverages for the celebration of the end of Ramadan, i.e., disasters-in-progress in mortal competition to find the optimal place to actually occur. But Republicans — we may be certain through sheer accident — did an absolutely stellar…

Did you know that the “evolution is evil” brand of Christian Fundamentalism is a uniquely modern phenomenon? In fact the term “fundamentalism” didn’t exist before the 1920s. That’s not to say Christian zealots didn’t exist, because of course they did, but I’m talking about a very specific set of dogmatic teachings here.
It began in the 19th century as a backlash against liberal and less literal dogmatic interpretations and tendencies in the Protestant Churches of the period.
And the idea that the earth is “only 4004 years old” stems from the theories of one Bishop.
His name was Ussher and he pre-dates modern fundamentalism by a couple of centuries. He wrote a time line for the history of the Earth, as he interpreted it through the Bible.
Everything that cites evolution as evil, as dinosaurs as fake, and so on is taking a set of ideas from the 17th century as fact.
"the signs of the times are dropping like flies"
I recently listened to a sermon where the speaker provided a list of signs that the rapture is quickly approaching. I have listened to about twenty years of these sermons so I was skeptical. First, I need to be fair, since his power point was not working, he may have had better sourcing and better points. Maybe he was off his game. Also, I will not name the speaker or his sermon out of respect for the speaker. I just want to provide commentary on his evidence. Further, he kept apologizing throughout the sermon about how he was glazing over these points. Personally, I would have rather he had chopped the sermon in half with better sourcing, but he kept inserting extra points from a larger lecture. So while there was supposed to be seven alliterated points, I counted ten. The first sign he gave was the sign of morality.
37 But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. 38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, 39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. ~ Matthew 24:37-39
He pointed out that the evidence was all around us. However, I am not convinced that we are becoming increasingly immoral, at least in this country. Divorce has been declining since the peak in 1981. Violent crime has been on the decline. Both school violence and gun homicides peaked in 1993. Certainly there are worse places in the world, but things have been looking up in this country for decades. Does this count as a reverse sign? The next sign was the sign of a miracle. According to the teacher, Israel becoming a nation in 1948 was nothing short of a miracle. I really have nothing to critique here, but we will come back to this, because he did. The next sign was the sign of meteorology. This sign was Israel “making the deserts bloom”. According to the speaker, they did this through their improved irrigation. This I really do not doubt. He said that the weather has changed since 1948, I don’t doubt that much either. If you put more water and plants in a desert, I can see it changing. The next sign was the sign of migration. I do not doubt this one really either. Certainly Jews have increased their immigration to Israel. The next sign was the millennial sign.
8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. ~ II Peter 3:8
The speaker noted that seven is the number of completion. From Adam to Abraham: 2000 years. From Abraham to Jesus: 2000 years. From Jesus to present day: 2000 years. This is the timeline that he is referencing. According to the speaker, we are nearing the end of sixth millennium with the seventh millennium being the thousand year reign of Christ after the seven year tribulation. This timeline only works if you follow a strict Ussher model and assume that there were no gaps in the genealogies. Back when I was in college, the earth was thought by some young earth creationists to be 10,000 years old. Today, most of them are more in line with Ussher. Obviously, I have issues with this timeline, because a young earth creation model does not best fit the evidence. The next sign was the military sign.
6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. ~ Matthew 24:6
The verse above is generally interpret to be a prophesy of increased war. However the verse does not say increased war, but simply war. This is good, because there seems to be a possible decline in war.
16 And the number of the army of the horsemen were two hundred thousand thousand: and I heard the number of them. ~ Revelation 9:16
The speaker went on to describe how the Arab Spring is a prelude to the upcoming Gog and Magog war. Then he referenced the 200 million army represented in Revelation 9. He cited China’s 200 million man army as a fulfillment of that prophecy. There is just one problem. China does not have a 200 million man army. China’s army is 2.3 million, nearly two orders of magnitude smaller than he claimed. I grew up on this myth, but now google is a thing. Well that is the first five of the ten signs. This seems like a good place to take a break.
Aaand we're back!
Ending the hiatus here on Tumblr and getting ready to publish the four remaining parts to the Called to Teach series.
It is amazing how an otherwise simple thing, such as the writing and posting of short pieces which are spiritual in nature, can take so much spiritual and mental energy. I also note that some internal element of discipline and diligence is required for the blogger or the book writer. They lack the wonderful motivational force that pastors have: the arrival of the Sunday morning service!
A personally convicting line for me from Archbishop James Ussher in his teaching on the sixth commandment: "What duties are required of us for preservation of the Souls of our Neighbors? First, The ministering of the food of spiritual life. Is. 62:6; 1 Pet. 5:2; Acts 20:28"
Ussher also suggests that we have violated both the sixth and the eighth commandments when we neither use the gifts that God has given us nor walk in our vocation as this ultimately harms others and takes away from their lives. Something to think about.
Sidebar: James Ussher was the Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland in the Church of Ireland from 1625 to 1656. He is best known for his book The Annals of the World, and for his chronology of the Bible which set the date of creation as the evening before October 23rd, 4004 BC. He is less well known for his book A Body of Divinity (which is where the above quote comes from). As near as I can tell from observation, before Systematic Theologies were called just that by their authors, they were sometimes presented with the title Ussher used: A Body of Divinity. For example, Thomas Watson's Body of Divinity is excellent and would be what I call devotional theology. The other recognizable label used early on would be Institutes (as in Calvin or Turretin).
Surely there are dark spiritual forces arrayed against the production and publication of spiritual content that is offered in the name of Jesus Christ on behalf of His Kingdom. These must be overcome.
