Scenes from The Varsitarian's 39th Ustetika Awards for Literature, where Nerisa del Carmen Guevara, Ramil Gulle, and I served as judges for poetry. Poet Roberto Añonuevo is this year's Parangal Hagbong recipient for Lifetime Achievement. The Faculty of Arts and Letters and The Graduate School dominated this year's winners. The UST Singers performed excerpts from their highly-regarded repertoire.

In AY 1985-1986, future Varsitarian Editor in Chief Vim Nadera (AY 1987-1988) organized the 1st Ustetika Awards, representing a contraction of "UST" and "estetika" (aesthetics). Ustetika winners for poetry, short fiction, one-act play, and essays in English and Filipino receive trophies, cash prizes and certificates.

The Varsitarian revived the Rector's Literary Award in 1991 as part of Ustetika to recognize individuals whose works exemplified the depth and diversity of literature in the university. Director, screenwriter, and playwright Jun Robles Lana is the first post-Martial Law recipient of this award.

In 1997, The Varsitarian introduced the 1st Parangal Hagbong during the 13th Ustetika Awards, honoring the lifetime achievements of National Artist for Theatre and Literature Rolando Tinio and fictionist and former UP Arts and Letters Dean Rogelio Sikat.

Over the years, the Varsitarian and Ustetika produced many writers who have made lasting contributions to Philippine literature and culture.

During The Varsitarian’s 39th Ustetika Awards for Literature, The UST Singers interpreted National Artist for Music Ryan Cayabyab’s “Tuwing Umuulan at Kapiling Ka, initially recorded by Basil Valdez for his BASIL album (Blackgold Records, 1978). The Eraserheads (“Ryan Cayabyab: The Silver Album,” BMG Pilipinas, 1996), Regine Velasquez (“Kailangan ko’y ikaw,” Viva Records, 2000), Noel Cabangon (”Tuloy ang Byahe,” Universal Records, 2012) and Ice Seguerra (”Araw Gabi: Mga Awit ni Maestro Ryan,” Universal Records, 2015) also recorded notable renditions of the song. The UST Singers, UST’s official mixed choral ensemble, was founded by Professor Fidel Calalang, Jr. in 1992. The group has garnered top choral prizes in Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Korea, Mexico, the Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Poland, Spain, and Switzerland 🥂

In a Facebook post dated 22 February 2013 (https://www.facebook.com/share/Si2EmdGVbuB1pDqs/?mibextid=WaXdOe), Playwright and historian Jose Victor Torres wrote that Ustetika’s roots may be traced back to 10 October 1947. The Varsitarian, UST’s official student paper, headlined the announcement of a Varsitarian Literary Contest with a total amount of P1050 cash prizes.

In 1959, The Varsitarian established The Rector's Literary Award to nurture and support young creative writers in the university (https://varsitarian.net/news/20071102/Ustetika).

The Rector's Literary Award was discontinued during Martial Law. Dalawang mukha ng pagkikita

Naririnig ko ang hagikgik ng mga naglalarong musmos,

kasabay ng paghambalos ng maingay na lata

sa tsinelas at sementadong lupa.

Nung una'y nangingilala ako dahil sa silaw

na labis na nakatirik at

ipinaabot ng hari mula sa ulap.

Hindi ko matiyak ang babaeng nakasuot ng bughaw

na daster na ilang dipa lamang ang pagitan sa akin.

Ginagapos ng isang lasong puti ang mahabang buhok niya,

may dalang isang mukha ng kanyang nakaraan.

Subalit ang paghalina ng kanyang ngiti

ang nagbadya sa pag-alala ng naipon na kwento

sa sulok ng aking ulo.

Arimya ang kanyang ngalan.

Sa tagal na pamamangka sa ilog,

nakadaupang-palad ko muli siya.

Bakas ng dinsol

Malapit ko nang masilayan ang pamimitak ng araw,

at sinisimulan ko na ang pagpapaagos

ng mga salita mula sa gripo na

dadaloy sa puting blankong papel na ito.

May ilang kataga na 'kong nabitawan,

tulad nito lamang,

subalit hanggang ngayon,

naghihimutok ang aking utak

at patuloy pa ring tumatakbo

sa paghahagilap ng talinhaga.

Nasasabik na akong masulyapan ang katapusang nais,

ngunit ang malawak na kalupaan ng imahinasyon

ang siyang pumupukol ng malaking hamon sa akin

na isalansang mabuti ang mga bagay na ito

at sa huli, mailathala.

Gawad Ustetika

Kakauwi ko lang galing sa Awards Night ng Ustetika. At wala po akong napanalunan. Kinabahan ako ng sobra sobra hindi dahil ineexpect kong mananalo ako, pero dahil kapag nasa paligid mo lang ang mga kapita-pitagang mga manunulat, manginginig ka na lang sa isang gilid at sasabihin mong "Sana paglaki ko, malaya ko ring naipapahayag ang sarili ko kagaya nila."

Hindi ko naman din inaasahang manalo. Sa kabila ng lahat, ginusto ko lang naman talagang sumulat. At ang pagsali sa ganito kalaking parangal ay isa nang malaking hakbang para sa buhay ko.

Tumupad ako sa pangako ko sa sarili ko na sasali ako sa Ustetika ngayong taon. Isa kasi sa mga New Year's Resolution ko yung tutuparin ko ang mga pangako, lalo na yung mga pangako ko sa sarili ko. At yan pa lang, feeling ko panalo na rin ako. :)

At panalo pa rin ako dahil nanalo ang kaibigan at blockmate kong si Renz Paguio, 2nd place sa Dula category! :)

Ang ganda ganda pa ng UST kanina. Maganda din ang araw ko kahit ngarag na ngarag na. :) Retorika subject, sobrang ganda ng lessons. Ang dami kong natututunan. Sobrang dami ko ding tawa sa mga kaibigan ko. Lord, maraming salamat po sa kanila. :) Ganda ganda ng UST, bukas lahat ng ilaw. Sana magaganda kuha ko sa manual camera. Thank you Lord for this day. :)

Kung may pinagsisisihan man ako, eh siyempre yun yung kung bakit hindi ko ginalingan dahil nakakahiya naman sa mga pinag-aalayan ko nung kwento ko. Pero di ko alam.

Kaya naman kahit hindi kailangan, gusto ko mag-sorry sa mga pinag-alayan ko nung ginawa ko para sa Ustetika, pero pareho na nilang hindi mababasa.

Kahit yung isa buhay pa.
