Death of Frederik II van Sierck, Bishop of Utrecht

On July 20, 1322, Frederik II van Sierck, Bishop of Utrecht, died after serving as the leader of one of the most important ecclesiastical and political territories in the medieval Low Countries. A member of the noble Van Sierck family, Frederik rose through the church hierarchy during a period when bishops often held both spiritual authority and secular power.

Frederik became Bishop of Utrecht in 1317, succeeding Guy of Avesnes. His episcopate took place during a time of political tensions between the bishopric, local nobles, and neighboring powers. As bishop, he was responsible for governing the Sticht of Utrecht, a territory where the bishop acted as both a religious leader and a prince with administrative and judicial authority.

His death in 1322 marked the end of a short but significant tenure. He was succeeded by Jan van Diest, who inherited the challenges of maintaining the bishopric’s influence in a region shaped by competing noble interests and shifting alliances.
