May 18, 2025 - Over a 100.000 people marched in The Hague, making it the largest demonstration in the Netherlands in 20 years, to condemn the Israeli genocide of the Palestinian people, and the complicity in this genocide of the Dutch government, universities, businesses and other institutions.
Most protesters came to the protest dressed in red, saying "Israel has to be stopped now, we are drawing the red line!", because even open ethnic cleansing, bombing of hospitals and ambulances, deliberate starving of children, constant war crimes and open genocide in general apparently aren't a red line for Israel to cross in the eyes of the Dutch government. For the rest of the world who is wondering why the Dutchies on their dash are celebrating:
in 2023 we had elections and our alt-right, nazi-loving, fascist party won, seemingly out of nowhere
Think 2016 Trump levels of bad
For almost a year, our government has been "functioning" like a kindergarten. Petty fights, doing politics over twitter instead of in-person, ministers who don't even know what their job is, etc.
Today, that horribly racist, ableist, homophobic, and transphobic party went to a meeting and in less than 10 minutes, stated they are leaving the coalition, which has caused our most right-wing cabinet in my lifetime to fall
We're celebrating a chance for our country to turn left again. And we're celebrating the end of one of the worst cabinets in recent history
We shit on the French a lot for their vowel usage (which is valid, bc wtf are y'all doing), but the Dutch also have some crazy combos like we got the classics [au, ou, ie] naturally, but then these make the same sounds [ei, ij], and then we got the double bitches [aa, ee, uu, oo] and then these random guys [oe, eu, ui], which are all different from the single vowels, but then you also have words that combo max more [eeu, ieu] and depending you can also have [aai, ooi, oei]. And you can just make it a multiple and add [en] to it.
I don't know, you don't have that in English and it's sad, bc oh and ooh don't hit the same as oeh or oef, like oof is not the same, idc what people say.
Anyway that is why we Dutch have monstrosities such as: zaaiuien (seed onions) or milieueisen (environmental requirements) or hooiaantasting (mold on hay) or koeieuier (cow udder). Like there is updated spelling with an extra n in there for the last to make it easier, but but the others are still like that. The og multiple vowels word was kraaieeieren [crow eggs], but that also got an updated spelling to kraaieneieren :(
