Virginia's improbable run to the College World Series culminated Wednesday night with a national championship.

The Cavaliers beat Vanderbilt 4-2 to win their first NCAA baseball title in school history, avenging last season's loss to the Commodores in the best-of-three final series at TD Ameritrade Park.

Brandon Waddell earned the win for U.Va., punctuating his historic career, while James River product Nathan Kirby got the save, striking out five of the seven batters he faced.

Surprise starter Adam Haseley and Josh Sborz combined on the shutout, senior utility man Thomas Woodruff drove in two runs, and the Cavaliers defeated Vanderbilt 3-0 on Tuesday night to force a winner-take-all game in the College World Series.

For the second year in a row, these two teams will go the distance in the best-of-three finals. Vanderbilt (51-20) will be playing for a second straight national title on Wednesday. Virginia (43-24) will be looking for its first.

Haseley, the Cavaliers' regular center fielder, hadn't pitched since May 23. The freshman gave coach Brian O'Connor all he could have hoped for, working into the sixth inning for his longest outing and turning over a scoreless game to Sborz (7-2).

Virginia broke through against Vandy starter Phil Pfeifer (6-5) for three unearned runs in the sixth after he had retired the first two batters.

Kenny Towns drove in three runs, including the winner in the seventh, and Josh Sborz pitched four innings of shutout relief as Virginia defeated Florida 5-4 on Saturday night to set up a College World Series finals rematch against Vanderbilt.

Virginia (42-23), which lost 10-5 to Florida on Friday, took two of three CWS games against the Gators (52-18) and now has won eight of its nine NCAA Tournament games. The Cavaliers open the best-of-three finals against a Vanderbilt team that beat them in three games for the championship last year.

It will be the first CWS finals rematch since Oregon State beat North Carolina in 2006-07.

Sborz (6-2) ran his shutout innings streak to 23 since May 15, getting Richie Martin to ground out after Harrison Bader reached on a two-out single in the ninth. Danny Lewis (6-2) took the loss.

Virginia's Brandon Waddell allowed two hits over seven-plus innings and got shutdown relief help from Josh Sborz in a 1-0 victory over Florida at the College World Series on Monday night.

Virginia's Brandon Waddell sure has taken a liking to pitching in TD Ameritrade Park.

Waddell turned in his third straight strong outing in the College World Series on Monday night, this time combining with Josh Sborz on a two-hitter in a 1-0 victory over Florida and what had been a prolific Gators offense.

"It seemed like from pitch one to when he came out in the eighth inning, he was in command of the game," Virginia coach Brian O'Connor said. "It's the best he's been all year. He saved his best outing of the year for a real important time."

he Cavaliers (41-22), the 2014 national runners-up, took control of their bracket and are off until Friday. They need one more win to reach next week's best-of-three finals. The Gators (50-17) will play an elimination game Wednesday against Miami, the team they beat by 12 runs in their Omaha opener.
