continued from here w/ @anger-mxnagement because this might be a long thread, buckle up kids, get your popcorn, and prepare for gay longing
He thought it would have been the usual bickering. A quick chastising to be a little more sensitive to the others. They were practically children in comparison. They didn't know what they knew. They hadn't seen the things they had seen. It felt like he was always lifting them up. Grumpy didn't mean anything by it. He knew that, but if he caught any of the youngest at their weaker moments, they'd crack. Doc simply got used to hen-pecking and being defensive. He was the one patching up scraped knees. They were so much older now and he still couldn't shake the habit. Even when Grumpy was right, though a little rough in the delivery, he had a nasty habit of trying to interrupt and sweeten the admonishing. It was bound to happen one day. This thread in their family was going to snap, bringing the scraps flying to the ground. "Grumpy, I ain't mean-" He felt a lump in his throat. Say something. You owe it to him. You're wrong. Stop talking over him. They'll keep rushing for you and Happy anyway but the least you can do is stop talking over him. "I..."
His voice cracked. They could be on edge at a moment's notice. He didn't want to fight. Unfortunately, Doc also had a stubborn streak. "Yer so 'ard on 'em! I know they screw up, but they ain't learned to be proper dwarfs! We're all they got! 'Course they don't know their ass from a hole in the ground!" He sputtered, feeling his heart drop. "Ain't gotta rub it in, jus' tell Sleepy it's wrong!" But it's been years... Failing can mean an injury or death. That's why he's tough. That's why he's hard. You're just getting soft.
