Matt blinked up at the woman, dark eyes wide with curiosity. He wasn’t used to having many women in his Daddy’s house, it was usually just him, Daddy, and Uncle Gabe. Aunt Tilly and Aunt Michael came to visit when they could buy never stayed too long. From his hiding place behind the couch, he could see her looking at some of the picture framed with Daddy and him in them and he was confused, but he didn’t say anything, he was afraid of new people. He always had been.
Once she’s satisfied her curiosity with the pictures, Kat sat down on one of the couches in the living room. If someone told her years ago that Gabriel Lorca would settle down and find himself in a domestic situation with Paul Stamets that included a child he obviously wholeheartedly adored, she probably would have called them a liar. But here she was, witnessing it.
She’d seen the child (Matthew Hugh Stamets, Gabriel had told her proudly) out of the corner of her eye when she’d first come in but she hadn’t engaged. The last thing she wanted to do was corner him and make him even more uncomfortable and shut down on her.
When Gabriel came back with her tea, she accepted it with a smile. “Why don’t you introduce me to your godson?” She suggested. “I’ve heard so much about him, after all.”
Gabriel assessed her and she was reminded of a younger Gabriel who tended to do the same he he came across interesting and possibly deadly specimens, “He’s shy.” Gabriel hedged, but he did turn towards where Matthew was hiding. “Hey, setito, do you want to come say hello to Admiral Cornwell?” He patted his knee with a smile.
