“Jasper sweetheart,” Esme’s smile faded from her lips and her words were soft as she pulled her adopted son into a hug. “You haven’t lost a thing. You’re so strong, and we all know that you can beat this.”
“I politely disagree.” Jasper didn’t move much at the hug, only leaning into her after a moments hesitation. “I’d say I’ve lost a lot. Everyone has. And I don’t...this is still extremely confusing.”
hisangelrosalie As much as Jasper wasn’t sure he liked the idea, he had to admit it made perfect sense. He knew just how important it was to blend in and if becoming twins did just that, he wouldn’t complain. Even though he knew there were subtle differences, he also knew that humans often saw what they wanted to see. And if they wanted to see twins, they would ignore the slight variations. His only concern was the actual twin herself. It hadn’t been either of their ideas and he wasn’t a hundred perfect sure Rosalie was fine with it. He doubted they could deter the family from the name change though, as it was already in place and undoing it wouldn’t help. Once Carlisle confirmed that all the papers were in place, he figured it was far too late to turn back then. “Well, it’s official. Your last name sounds better than mine, anyway.”

This was not how he’d planned on it going. This was the exact opposite and it had ended badly as expected. Bad enough that he’d taken off out the back door three days ago and had been wandering around ever since. It was the first screw up since they’d joined and he hadn’t wanted to stick around to see how it would play out. He’d consciously made absolutely no decisions about where he was going or when he would return to avoid alerting Alice to where he was. He didn’t want her following. It wasn’t that hard to take notice of her. But Jasper was surprised it was Rosalie who had been sent, or that it was her who had decided to go after him. He hadn’t made a huge effort to cover his trail, figuring he could always keep going if someone came his way. However, since it was her, he didn’t move from his spot standing by a tall pine. “Yes?”

Rosalie Hale was probably the third strangest person Jasper had ever met. Carlisle was first and Alice was second. She was annoyingly difficult to get a read on, although it should have been easy since she only seemed to vary in degrees of some sort of annoyance. That consistently changed when she was around Emmett, but there was so much underneath it was confusing. That wasn’t even starting on the topic of their sudden intrusion into the family. Alice was still fairly oblivious to the disruption they’d caused. Or she noticed and didn’t care. There was nothing from her that said she minded. He was mostly unsure about whether or not Rosalie minded. He thought she did, but he did try to avoid her enough not to figure it out. It wasn’t until someone, he suspected his mate, decided they needed to fix that and demanded they hunt together. As he knew he was right on who he presumed offered the idea, he wasn’t going to try to argue. No one could make them talk on the hunt and it wasn’t the most social of activities they could’ve picked. Upon meeting her at the front door, he pushed it open for her and asked “Shall we?”

He almost grimaced at her and her expression. It was no secret. Nothing about their conversation was a secret. He knew just how much it hurt her and he knew just how much she wanted it to be different. He also knew that the reason behind his words wasn’t a secret. It wasn’t like it could be a secret, not with all the moves and the rushes home to go make sure it didn’t cause any issues. But she didn’t care about that. That was obvious. The sudden hands on his were a surprise. It shouldn’t have been though. Esme was fairly big on physical contact. Thankfully, he’d gotten better at not reacting before reaching the Cullens. That was good, though. For both of them.
“Unfortunately, that’s a lot easier said than done.” She probably knew that though. “And that’s not...the problem. Can’t stop a car with no brakes just because the driver doesn’t want the car running away. It’s out of their-my control. There isn’t any control. I don’t have it.”

It was subtle, he had to give her that. He probably wouldn’t have noticed if he hadn’t had such a large amount of time to get to know his gift. Her busyness hadn’t made it any easier. Jasper hadn’t been able to get a solid read on her when she was active and when there were others in the house. But he noticed, in the end. There was too much fluctuation with her to be normal. And there was the undercurrent. Thankfully, the house was empty for the day. School was still sketchy with him so he was skipping for the day under the guise of the flu. It wasn’t hard to find her. Vampire hearing had many upsides. He did consciously make a bit more noise than normal just so she knew he was coming. Even though his idea probably should’ve been executed in silence, he didn’t want to startle her or anything. He came up beside her carefully, contemplating his words for the moment. The last thing he wanted to do was make the situation worse. “You don’t have to do that, you know. Hide it. Fake it. It’s not good for you and you don’t have to spare me. You should be able to feel your own feelings.”

It was consistently difficult to hide a gift from a psychic. Which was the exact reason why Jasper hadn’t chosen anything yet. Or that was one of the reasons, at least. The other, more important one, was mainly the fact that he didn’t like the idea of going off to find a gift alone. As small and uncrowded as the local shopping center was, he didn’t have that much trust in himself. Another part of his plan had quickly become an issue when in consciously not making any decisions, he hadn’t left himself that much time to find something. Fortunately, there was Esme. A majority of the others had gone off on a hunting trip while Alice and Rosalie had gone out with plans involving getting things for one of the new cars and new rooms. He didn’t know why Esme stayed behind, but he was grateful for it when he went to find her. With some luck, Alice would be too busy to see that he’d decided to go out. “Esme? Could I get your help with something?”

It had been about six months after the final agreement on the name change. That was probably the main reason Jasper had been trying to avoid Rosalie after their most recent move, courtesy of him. They'd finally been getting along well.
Avoiding someone wasn't the easiest when they were living in the same house. He tried his best though. He knew her record, knew how she'd done in the beginning. There was a very good chance the accident would ruin what tentative relationship he'd built with his 'twin.' He supposed it wasn't that tentative, but he was afraid to ruin it. He liked Rosalie, she wasn't someone he wanted to have disliking him. Jasper was more concerned about her hating him. And she had a very good reason to. Not that he would blame her if she did, but he was hoping to avoid that. And so, he was avoiding her in hopes of her not being able to develop an opinion yet. Out of sight, out of mind. It had been working, until he miscalculated their hunting time and hadn't paid much attention to where he was going until it was inevitable that he would cross paths with her with no time to change course.
