she waved it off before he even had the chance to finish his sentence, mug clutched between both hands as she sat down on the bench beside him. she'd never been much like mags had been, with that soft, comforting nature of hers, or even wiress who had been strange but calming regardless. they'd been handed the worst deck that year, but their mentors had been the one stroke of luck. maysilee was too rough around the edges to emulate that same energy, but she did try her best to be helpful and transparent while also remaining hopeful. she approached things a hell of a lot differently than haymitch did, not that she could entirely blame him for his surly demeanor. he'd lost everything. she didn't let that give him a pass to be a jerk, though, and often gave him a hard time about how he treated their mentees year after year.
this time someone beat her to the punch . . . literally.
she wasn't ashamed to admit she had laughed. maysilee believed that people could say what they wanted with the expectation that sometimes those words had consequences. the consequence for haymitch was a mean right hook. it reminded her so much of her slapping drusilla back when she was just 16, refusing to accept the disrespect from their poor excuse of an escort. she respected it, and hoped daniel could hold onto that energy in the arena too.
❛ you'll find that i don't lecture much. it would make me a hypocrite. ❜ she thought highly of those who refused to settle for less than they deserved. especially someone young. ❛ you deserve to be treated like a human, and you deserve to be given a fair chance. never apologize for fighting to live. haymitch knows better. ❜ she'd remind him of that fact too. we were in their shoes once. ❛ that was a pretty good punch. you know how to fight ? ❜
