Rundown of my recent issue:
Check engine light came on, first thing I do is pull the code. P0171 System Too Lean. Hit up Google, get a tip to test fuel trim at idle and at load. Do so, and it’s high idle, dropping fast under load. Vacuum leak.
Listen and look around the engine bay, squeezing lines to see if anything changes. Find an unused vacuum port with a plastic cap, put my finger on it, and BAM idle smooths. Repeat fuel trim test, and that port covered everything is rosy. Unblock, instantly back to high idle trim.
My mom is in town anyways, she’ll grab replacement caps for me on her way back.
Total parts cost to fix this: $3.50. And that is for a pack of multiple size caps so that for future problems or helping friends with their cars I might dodge having to buy caps again.
Having this scan tool is really nice. Saved a lot of time diagnosing this, and is less time running my engine in this state to get to and from places to have the code checked. And possibly a whole lot more in diagnostic costs if I had trouble figuring it out, or in parts fixing the wrong problem. $30 well spent.
