in august and september 1900, edouard vuillard visited his friend felix vallotton, who had been staying for the summer and autumn at the chateau de la naz at romanel, outside lausanne, switzerland

vallotton n’avait plus peint de paysages purs depuis 1897, les œuvres de ses derniers séjours à étretat relevant davantage de la scène de genre. à romanel, il expérimente la formule nabie, auparavant appliquée déjà au portrait, au nu et à la scène de genre. travaillant à coups de pinceau très courts orientés horizontalement, le peintre commence par les grandes surfaces colorées avant de s’attaquer aux éléments secondaires, puis enfin aux contours ....
