In the prologue, the storyteller (Valentin Nikulin) portrays the young girl he sits beside as the mermaid (Viktoriya Novikova) and the young man she stares at sitting across from them as the prince (Yuri Senkevich). Falling in love with his own heroine, he inserts himself into the fairy tale to aid her.
