THE THING ABOUT THE SEASONS IS THAT IT AIN’T ALL THAT SIMPLE . everyone reckons it’s all demeter’s doing ; the train just pulls up and persephone hops on , so everything’s right as rain . but persephone’s body is a clock . one of those ridiculous rules her pa devised , gods knows he liked to mess with women’s bodies . it’s timed for spring , right down to her bones. she wakes aching , feeling cold like she never has before , crawls out of bed to grab her fur coat , made special , only the best for hades’ wife . her head pounds , she feels like she’s been hit by a truck , and that’s when she knows she can’t dwell in the underworld long . she’s used to it by now , so is hades . he gathers her in his arms , and keeps her warm whilst he can , until there’s no heat left , between their bodies . then he helps her pack . slowly , sadly .
the shades know , too . they rely on the distant whistle of the train , they stop and listen , until the train pulls up at the station and hades barks at them to get back to work . she feels their eyes follow her , wide and brimming with longing . each goodbye is harder than the last , and she always saves hades for last .
