What Makes Kathniel, Kathniel?

The Filipino nation has always been fixated with teleseryes and other forms of entertainment which are strategically designed to become the talk of the town. What’s recently been in the headlines is how the local fanaticism made it into global level by beating trending records, and actively participating in other online platforms. We have the #LizQuen #JaDine and of course #AlDub that continues to thrive because of their dedicated fans. If we could quite recall, KathNiel has been the earliest of these fast rising pairings to consume the love and adoration of the viewers in this decade. So, even before the kalyeserye clicked or before the wings of love took its flight, What makes Kathniel, Kathniel?

Got to believe is a romantic comedy television series aired on ABS-CBN around 2013 with Daniel Padilla and Kathryn Bernardo as the lead characters. By recalling the storyline of Got to Believe, we recall the earlier stages of the pairing.

 1.     FORMULA  : Bad boy + Naive girl 

Kathryn and Daniel are too young to be smooching like in those American series that, well, involve a lot of content inappropriate for certain ages. Thus with much lesser kissing scenes, how do they intend to bring the kilig factor? By casting Daniel as a character that highlights his Padilla features (stance, voice,looks, etc) whilst casting the cute Kathryn Bernardo in roles that balances the bad boy character of his leading man, they are able to create a chemistry similar to the ones brought by the Hallyu wave. Hence, we have Chichay and Joaquin! It works everytime.

2.     Rich boy + Poor Girl Story

Another template overly used but still seems very palatable to masses. Filipinos are suckers for rags to riches story or simply put, the ganti ng api plot. Whether it’s Mara Clara (which Kathryn starred in also) or Chichay, we just like rooting for the underdogs.

3.     It’s an appetizer to the main course

Filipinos will get tired of watching series if most of the primetime shows are heavy dramas. This show is quite light as compared to other primetime shows that rely on the ability of their actressess to shed tears. Expect these heavy dramas to have kidnapping scenes, catfights and long lost sons/daughters. Then again, with the comical lines and scenes in Got To Believe, there is something you will enjoy watching probably while having dinner with family.
