tejo
tejo was aware that you’d been busy. he saw it before he heard it—no more late nights spent snuggled in bed, waking up to a fresh brew of coffee, and early morning gym sessions. he found himself alone during the last week, which was colder than the difficult morning air.
your work with viper was nothing to scoff at. though he wasn’t familiar with the type of work you two did, long hours and restless behavior told him everything he needed to know. his rocky relationship with brimstone, and therefore viper, prevented him from just barging into the lab and requesting (demanding) you take a break. so he’d have to wait, in bed, cold and alone, until either you came back or the sun rose once more.
he was not built for this.
from what the initiator had garnered, there was some sort of freak accident in the lab. not enough to fatally injure anybody, but viper had been sent to see sage for at least a few hours. and judging by the fact that he hadn’t seen you in a week, the woman was not happy.
he was no stranger to overworking himself to make up for mistakes. mistakes in the field meant working overtime to fix them, using effort as forgiveness. but at the end of the day he’d always sleep, eat, take care of himself. whatever you were doing to yourself was not this, and he was starting to grow restless with worry.
sighing as he sat up in bed, he ran his hands over his face. a chill ran over his still-warmed body, a reminder that he was alone in bed. it was late and hq was quiet, the only sound the hum of the heater as it worked. the eighth night he was by himself, another night you were up in the lab working to fix your mistakes.
swinging the blankets off of him he stood out of bed. after his usual stretch-and-groan he put on his glasses (and a shirt), leaving his bedroom with the intent of coming back with you in his arms.
hq was quiet as he walked through it, agents either asleep or hiding out in their rooms. the floor was cold against his bare feet, goosebumps rising on his arms. but he walked with a certain determination, and once he was set on something he would not stop until he had it.
lucky for him, another assistant had just been leaving when he reached the door to viper’s lab, the colombian able to sneak in. it was even colder inside, he thought, the sterile air and humming machinery somewhat suffocating to the untrained senses. he found you almost immediately, hunched over and asleep at your desk.
you were the only one left.
heart clenching, tejo made his way over to you. your hair was mussed and your face was pressed into the crook of your elbow, papers and other work scattered across the table. when he placed his hand on your shoulder you jumped, whipping your head around.
“easy, cariño,” he murmured, watching you slowly realize and sigh deeply. as you pushed your face against his stomach he cradled your head, smoothing out any knots in your hair.
“how did you get in here?” you asked, looking up at him. he just shook his head, not offering a real answer.
“that’s the last thing you should be worried about, hmm?” he replied, brushing loose hair out of your face, “you look exhausted.”
the words made you frown, you knew it was true. bloodshot eyes, dark circles underneath. each step you took around the lab felt like you were being dragged down to just lay on the floor. but the work did not stop, fixing your mistakes and pleasing your boss came first.
“i know, it just… there’s so much work to do, on top of everything else…” you started just to stop. you knew you were floundering, tejo knew it too. his hands found your cheeks, making you stop your nervous shifting to look at him.
“i haven’t seen you in a week, [name],” he responded. despite the playful nature of his tone you could hear the hurt behind it, “when’s the last time you had a meal?”
the fact that you had to stop and think about it told him everything he needed to know. with a small huff he nudged you to your feet, hands on your sides as you stand together. he’s silent, and you know behind those aviators he’s taking in your disheveled state. you frown, feeling guilty, but that tiny part of you refused to stop and consider everything else outside the four walls. after a moment of silence he offered a hum.
“lets go get you something to eat,” he took you by the hand, leading you away from your work and towards the lab door.
“but, what about the—?”
“your work can wait,” he responded, continuing to lead you away without a bat of an eye, “come on, i’ll make your favorite. then we’ll get some much needed sleep.”
fighting was futile as the lab door hissed shut behind the two of you. your boyfriend was always a man who was determined, and he was now determined to take care of you and nurture you back to health. all you really could do, you realized, was let him guide you through the halls and into the kitchen. hq was dead silent as he flicks on the light, guiding you to sit at the island.
you weren’t sure what to say as he started to work at the kitchen counter, putting together the ingredients for your favorite meal. honestly, you weren’t sure if you even could say anything, sleep already starting to take over now that you weren’t hunched over lab reports. by the time tejo had finished cooking and placed the plate in front of you, you’d already drifted off. a warm hand on your shoulder wakes you up.
“cariño?” he called, your eyes blinking open. once you noticed the meal you gave him a sheepish smile, picking up the utensil and starting to eat.
he sat next to you the whole time, hand caressing your scalp as he watches you eat. and once you finish he puts the plate away without a single word, coming back to your side. as you lean against him he cradles your head, gazing at you even through his aviators.
“lets go get some rest, okay? we can sleep all day tomorrow,” the colombian starts, sure of himself, “then after that, we can finish up your work.”
“we? tejo, you—“
“i’m sure filling out pieces of paper in the way you tell me to cannot be that difficult, amor,” he cuts off. though there’s humor in his tone you know he’s being serious, dead set on helping you. there wasn’t much to protest, you thought.
“alright…” with a pause to sigh, you smiled, “thank you.”
“any time. …te amo.” a kiss.
“i love you too.”
chamber
vincent was used to getting everything he wanted. he had the money, the genius, the charm. he had you, after all. if there was one thing he would never rid of it would be you, his light after a long day of tinkering and shooting at people.
…so suffice to say he was pretty grumpy.
the last time he spoke to you was the day the accident happened, when a worried jett had come to him telling him about something happening to you in the lab. when he was checking up on you (panicking) he heard the full story—something about a freak accident and how viper had it worse than you did. that was the last time he heard from you, which drove him mad the more time that passed. especially knowing you were injured to some extent.
what didn’t help, either, was his relationship with your boss, viper. every time he thinks back to the time he endlessly flirted with her, especially being in a relationship with you now, fills him with embarrassment. it was the only time his charm fell flat, and now he was paying the price.
endlessly pacing like a caged animal in front of the entrance to the lab was not an option, so he opted instead to go out of his way to pass by the door every time he left his room for something. at some point it was dizzying, and he found himself leaving just for a glass of water, only to come back out a few minutes later in search for another.
calling you was not an option. actually, your phone still sat on vincent’s nightstand. notifications piling up from friends, colleagues, other apps you owned and used. it frustrated him to no end, each unchecked buzz a reminder that you were locked away to the one place on base he could not talk or pay his way into.
unless…?
the endless humming of machinery and the sterile smells of the lab was the only thing keeping you alive and running at this point. despite your body begging for a real rest on a comfortable surface, your work to repair your mistakes was far from over.
nose-deep in a lab report, you didn’t register a tapping noise until about the fifth time it sounded. looking up, at the window directly facing your desk, you saw a sight you never expected to see before during your time here. there was jett, hovering outside your window, tapping the glass with a handful of pebbles. every time she floated underneath the pane’s view she would updraft again, cheeky grin on her face. furrow in your brow you got up, moving to open the window to speak to the young korean.
“jett? what are you doing?” you asked her, watching her updraft for the nth time to remain at the same height as you.
“hey, [name]! your crazy rich boyfriend paid me to come tell you that he wanted to see you,” the woman replied, acting as if this was just a regular day at valorant. ah yes, vincent. in spite of forgetting to sleep and eat properly the frenchman was always on the back of your mind, guilt gnawing at you for not checking with him. each time you promised yourself you would, work pulled you in again.
“i understand, jett, but i really can’t just leave…” you started to reply before she cleared her throat loudly and dramatically.
“i was told to, and i quote…” she pulled out a piece of paper from her back pocket, unfolding it and reading it, “‘use force if she does not comply.’”
a sigh was your only reply. of course he thought of that, the idea that you would be reluctant to leave your work alone. and it was a lucky guess, too, as you were far too tired to try and evade the wind assassin’s sharp kunai. let alone energized enough to actually be able to.
“alright, alright, i’ll go,” you relented, much to jett’s chagrin, “just, go stand on solid ground, would you?”
with one last updraft and a cheeky laugh the woman hovered off, likely to go joke with her friends about the unlikely situation. running your hands over your face you knew it was time to face the outside world. taking a moment to tidy up your space and put away any dangerous materials, you slipped out of the lab without much fuss.
hq was relatively alive, agents mostly relaxing between training sessions and debriefs. you paid no mind to anybody, already imagining yourself asleep in the bed you shared with vincent. you could practically see his face—the worry in his eyes, the itch in his brow. that guilty feeling was in your chest again.
when the door hissed open with your arrival, vincent was already on his feet, at the door in a few long strides. expression just how you imagined it his hands found your cheeks, holding you like porcelain. he was speaking before the door had a chance to close behind you.
“mon amour, are you okay? i have not seen you in a week, i was very worried about you,” he started, voice thick with concern.
“vincent, i’m okay—“
“are you sure? you do not look well, and your injury—!”
“sage took care of it,” you replied, which made his jaw snap shut. it was enough to soothe his nerves, the worry melting into the back parts of his mind. it was silent for a long stretch as he collected his thoughts, speaking again with a much softer tone.
“you worried me quite a bit, [name],” he confessed, hands moving down to squeeze your shoulders.
“i know, its just… so much had happened, and everything piled on at once, and…” as you struggled to find the words, vincent did not try and rush them. in fact, he needed no explanation. he knew the feeling, knew the hole one could dig themselves in with work.
“i understand. but it is important to me that you know you can lean on me for support, no? i may not be knowledgeable of what you do, but you must take care of yourself, too,” he replied, which made the guilt sink in your chest more. he knew, he saw that distinct look on your face, and he knew what you were thinking.
“come, i drew you a bath. let me take care of you,” he continued, starting to lead you to the connected bathroom.
“but—“
“no buts.” sigh.
…
“i cannot believe you paid jett to come get me.”
“desperate times call for desperate measures, chèrie.”
cypher
amir had no idea what to do with himself.
he was supposed to be the one like this. cooped up in his workshop, not sleeping for days on end as he combs through files and information in order to please his boss. he was supposed to be the one working himself to the bone, crashing once you finally interfered to drag him by the collar of his jacket to get some real sleep. now? he was stumped.
he wasn’t the one being like this. in fact, he had nothing to do. which, in his mind, was even worse, as he had more time to worry over you. though he wasn’t technically privy to the information, enough snooping had told him everything he needed to know regarding the accident involving you and your boss. you weren’t injured, but viper had been, and no doubt you were working around the clock to fix what had gone wrong.
he didn’t know what to make of it. it was the first time the moroccan had been stumped. he would try what you normally do, drag you to bed by the collar of your shirt then make you a meal once you woke up, but it wasn’t like him. to everyone else, at least. even just leaving his room with an ounce of a worried aura around him would have the younger agents tearing him apart.
even then, it wasn’t like he was best friends with sabine callas, and waltzing directly into her lab was not an option. but you’d been locked away in there, for almost a week, and it wasn’t something he could just sit by and let happen any longer.
it was time for him to get creative.
the lab was sterile and cold, just like it always was. hums of machinery, clacking of metal flooring as your coworkers walked around. everyone had been on edge since the incident, you included. it was best to keep your head down, work on your reports as quickly as possible in order to get out of there. despite exhaustion pulling at you, you trekked on, knowing what could happen if you stopped to breathe.
the first thing amiss that you did not notice was the light of a security camera blinking on. it was just subtle enough to not catch your eye. what caught your ear, though, was the sound of the camera turning to the left. as you lifted your head it stilled, making you wonder if your mind was playing tricks on you. back to work.
unbeknownst to you, another light blinked on. then another, and another, and another. then another camera moved, and another, until they were all turned on and looking at you. that was what got you to stop, the array of security cameras all staring you directly down.
was something broken? code malfunction? or were you being hacked, someone in your system? you should tel am—
wait a minute.
“cypher?” the camera in front of you nodded enthusiastically, confirming your suspicions. all you could manage was an irritated sigh, staring at the camera as the light blinked in a steady fashion.
“cypher, i don’t have time for this. i have a lot of work i have to—“ what made your jaw snap shut was the way the camera looked from side to side in slow motion, signaling the man was not listening to what you were saying. a heavy sigh was heaved, and you chose to ignore it for the time being, returning to what you were doing before.
you thought that was it, but it was quite the opposite. the sentinel refused to leave the system, using his prowess to keep the cameras trained on you, lights blinking. you knew the man had a penchant for watching, but this was ridiculous. the ever blinking light, which you were acutely aware of, was driving you insane as you tried to work. at some point you had enough, abruptly standing up to glare at the camera. after another moment you stormed off, intent on giving the man a piece of your (sleep deprived) mind.
moving down the halls, not caring for the way your colleagues stared at you weirdly, you reached your shared bedroom with relative ease. you stepped inside and quickly the door hissed shut, in which you turned to face the man inside.
“amir, do you have any idea how irritating that is when i… have work to do…” your anger soon soothed as you saw the state of the room. every last one of cypher’s monitors were off, the led lights dimmed to almost nothing. he sat in his chair facing the door, fiddling with one of his trapwires. his mask was off.
“my rose, do you have any idea how much you worry me when you lock yourself in the lab like this?” he replied, similar to how you stormed through the door, “i’m supposed to be the one overworking themselves.”
he ended his sentence with a dry, wry laugh. without his mask you could see the genuine worry on his face, hidden beneath a teasing tone. it made guilt settle in your chest, finally understanding that his camera gesture wasn’t just meant to piss you off. he stood up, walking over to you just to pull you into a hug you immediately reciprocated.
“i…” you started, but had no excuse for your overworking behavior, “…i’m sorry for yelling at you.”
he squeezed you tighter in return.
“it’s okay, habibti. you are tired,” he mumbled into your shoulder, voice muffled by your clothes. he pulled back after a few long minutes, hands on your shoulders as he gazed at you. he took in the dark circles under your eyes, the way you could barely keep them open. or yourself upright.
“lets rest, hmm? i even turned off the monitors just for you,” amir said, gesturing to the powered-off screens behind him. he was a man who loved to stay on top of things, which meant they were always on, always observing. the fact that they weren’t, meant he was serious about this. you sighed deeply, not even in the mood to come up with a snarky remark or an amused laugh. you just leaned into him, grateful for his keen eye.
“thank you, amir,” you mumbled gratefully. fighting sleep was difficult, and he knew it. he guided you into the shared bed, tucking himself in behind you.
“of course, my rose,” though it was easy to dismiss, he’d do it for you every time. because he knew you did it for him, too.
Lighting study I decided to use Cypher for after I was inspired by a song. I really wanted an excuse to draw him though lol
I've never actually painted a sunset before(A sin as an artist I know) so it was a fun challenge honestly. Simplified the background a bit compared to my original sketch.
