Lingers In My Mind
Warnings: mentions of blood, I think that’s it. Let me know if there’s anything else.
Words: About 2100
A/N: It’s been awhile since I last posted something, so here ya go! This was not requested, but I wanted to write a vampire thing and I had this terrible & dumb idea. This was suppose to be a drabble, but I got carried away. Sorta based on True Blood vampires. I’m hoping to have a request posted soon, if I can get the story unstuck.

“I can’t do this anymore, Caleb. I can’t surround myself with all this death and bloodshed and act like it’s normal. I want…need my old life back.” You avoided making eye contact with Caleb, fearing the moment you looked into his eyes rather you would give in. The two of you had been arguing for hours and you were emotionally and physically tired of it all.
“Come on, love. Please don’t say that, you know I’ll always keep you safe. Whatever it takes, remember?” Caleb pleaded with you, reaching out for your hand, which you quickly pulled away from him.
“No, you can’t and you can’t possibly promise that. I can’t take looking over my shoulder and wondering if today will be the day that Simcoe and his pack get me and try to use me against you and Ben. I’m tired of it, Caleb. I’m tired of being a pawn in someone else’s game.” You were trying your best not to break down in front of him, you needed to be strong in order to do this but that didn’t keep your voice or heart from breaking.
“Please, [Y/N], we can make this work. We can start over somewhere new, just me and you. We can go wherever you want. Just say you’ll think about it, that’s all I ask. Please.” He begged, you still had yet to look him in eyes but you could hear the pain in his voice.
You looked up to see red tears falling down his face, you felt your heart beginning to crumble. You had never felt so conflicted before, you wanted to comfort him and tell him you were sorry for hurting him, but you wanted him and all the drama that followed him out of your life. You knew you had to end it, you needed to be your own person again.
“I hope you can forgive me for this,” you stepped over to him, kissing his cheek and taking in his scent of woodsmoke and the ocean one last time before walking over to your front door and opening it. “Caleb Brewster, I rescind your invitation into my home.” You finally gave into the tears while you watched an invisible force violently push him out of your home. You shut the door in his face and leaned against it, debating on whether or not to open it again.
“I’ll always love you, [Y/N]. Please remember that.” You could hear his voice on the other side of the door.
Caleb spent the next month sitting at your bedroom window every night, singing to you while you slept and keeping an eye out for Simcoe or his pack before you finally broke and turned to Mary for a protection spell to keep him and all other supernatural creatures away from your home.
Two months in and you still felt the pain of his absence. You tried purging him from your life, you burned all the letters he insisted on writing you and all the photos of you two together. You deleted and blocked every trace of Caleb from your phone and social media. You wanted to it to feel like he never existed in your life but nothing seemed to make the pain go away. Your resolve was beginning to crack, you had constant arguments with yourself on whether or not to go back to him. You were starting to think you’d made the biggest mistake of your life.
Three months in and you finally couldn’t take it anymore, he was gone from your life but the traces of his blood in your veins still brought you dreams of him every night. You couldn’t escape him, no matter how hard you tried. You had managed to help sneak your way into New York City, traveling only during the day and staying in the homes of fellow humans who specialized in helping people like you.
It was just shy of four months later when you finally found a vampire willing to help you, and all he asked for was a feeding, a fair price he claimed for breaking the bond of another vampire and their mate, he was intrigued that Caleb had yet to turn you. He said he usually broke the bonds of makers and progenies, but was more than willing to assist you in breaking your bond to Caleb. His assistant, Abigail, who introduced herself to you as a faerie who would be helping Mr. Andre with severing the bond, welcomed you into the house and led you into a beautifully decorated candle lit office.
“Please, make yourself comfortable. John will be in shortly.” Abigail smiled as she walked out of the room. You were only alone for a few minutes before a handsome man walked into the office and made his way over to you, he took a seat next to you.
He introduced himself and made small talk while doing his best to make you feel as comfortable as possible. Soon enough his charming nature began to work its magic on you as you started to feel at home beside him. He finally cut right to the chase and said he would start with the feeding, to ensure that you were feeding him of your own free will and not while under his influence.
“I promise to be gentle as I can, Miss [Y/N].” John softly whispered into your ear as he tilted your head to the side, allowing him better access to your delicate neck. As his fangs pierced the soft skin of your neck, your mind filled with thoughts of all the times you fed Caleb and the feeling of his beard tickling your neck. You wanted to push John off of you and find Caleb, but you wiped away the tears from your eyes and let John finish feeding. After he finished, he bit into his wrist and allowed you to drink, when you tried to stop, he urged you to drink more.
“Oh, my dear girl, did I hurt you?” He asked as notices a tear falling down your cheek.
“No, not at all. I’m just ready for this to be over, for this constant feeling of my heart breaking to go away and that I’ve made a mistake.” You quietly admitted while you sat up and nervously rubbed the spot where John had bit you.
“My blood will take care of those troublesome dreams of your former paramour, I shall do my part in removing the memories of him and Abigail will use her magic to make sure we properly break the bond.” John reassured you. “Now, what was the name of your mate?”
“Caleb. Caleb Brewster.” You weakly smiled, you never realized how much you had missed having his name on your lips.
“I can see why Mr. Brewster chose you for his mate and why he never turned you, Miss [Y/N]. You are by far the lovliest young lady and with the sweetest blood that I have had in centuries,” you blushed at his compliments, but deep down they only served to remind you of the things Caleb would tell you before and after feeding. “All I need you to do is to listen to the sound of my voice and look into my eyes, and do not look away. There’s no need for you to worry, Abigail and I will take care of the rest and make sure you are returned home safely. I hope we can meet again, under better circumstances of course.” John smiled as he held your hand, kissing your knuckles.
You woke up late the following morning feeling happy, almost like it a heavy weight had been lifted off your shoulders. You smiled as you stretched out on the large bed, you felt like you had a new path laid out before you.
It had been more a year since you had spent that evening with John, you could never remember why you were in New York with him in the first place, but a voice in your head would always tell you that life was better with a bit of mystery.
You walked up the steps of Anna and Selah’s house, you had been trying figure out when the last time you had spent time with all of your friends but you couldn’t remember. You rarely left your home, especially at night, but tonight was Anna’s birthday and she always went all out for her birthday so you felt obligated to make an appearance.
Before you had the chance to knock on the door, Selah swung the door open and greeted you, “[Y/N]!” He pulled you for a hug, “I feel like I haven’t seen you in centuries. Annie’s gonna be thrilled you made it.”
“Considering that I am very much a human, I highly doubt that it’s been centuries.” You teased him while he escorted you into the living room where most of the guests were gathered.
You spent most of the party catching up with Mary and Abe and looking at pictures of their children. Finally, after what felt like centuries of listening to Abe ramble on about his new obsession for organic gardening, Anna saved you as she pulled you into the makeshift dance floor, saying it was time for you to have a good time.
You laughed while she tried to teach you some ridiculously old fashioned formal dance, until you noticed a man in the corner of the room staring at you like the sight of you was causing him pain. You tried to push the thought of this stranger out of your mind while you continued dancing with Anna. The rest of the night, the bearded man was always in the corner of whatever room you were in, constantly watching you.
Once the party started to die down as the sunrise was quickly approaching, you found yourself alone in the kitchen helping to clean up the mess left behind.
“Hey.” You heard someone greet you, you turned around to see the bearded man from earlier standing in the doorway. “Were you just gonna to ignore me all night?”
“I’m sorry?” You were confused at his question.
“That’s all you have to say, [Y/N]? You’ve had me so worried,” he tried walking towards you, but you managed to keep the kitchen table between you and this unknown man. “I thought somethin’ terrible happened to you. I tried gettin’ a hold of you for months.”
“I think you may have me confused with someone else.” You were beginning to get scared of the man standing in front of you, but something also felt vaguely familiar about him.
“Stop playing games, [Y/N]. We’ve been through too much together for such childish games.” The anger and frustration in his voice made you want to run, but knowing that most of Anna’s friends were also vampires, you knew wouldn’t even make it to the door before he got to you. You were kicking yourself for not bringing your silver mace.
“Please. You have me confused with someone else, we have never met. Just let me go, I promise I won’t say anything to Anna or Selah.” You pleaded.
“[Y/N]. I’m not gonna hurt you, I would never do that, you know me. I’m sorry I have to do this.” He was next to you before you had the chance to react. He held your head still while he looked into your frightened eyes. “Listen to me, [Y/N]. I’m not going to hurt, you know that, right?” You obediently nodded, he hated he had to use his powers on you but you were worrying him and it was all he had left. He would deal with the guilt of breaking yet another promise to you later, but right now he just wanted to know why you were treating him like he was a stranger.
“Do you know who I am?” Caleb asked, he looked into your glassy eyes while you shook your head no. There was only thing could explain why you couldn’t remember him, and he prayed that you didn’t go with that option.
“Do remember Caleb?” He held out hope that his name was still in there somewhere, you may not remember his face but you had to remember how much you loved each other and everything you had been to be together. Surely there was no way to break that bond, no vampire or witch was powerful enough to sever a bond that strong. You didn’t answer him, just stared at him with a vacant look in your eyes.
“Please answer me, [Y/N]. Do you remember Caleb?”
“No.”
