Daily fish fact #417
Candiru!
Also called vampire fish, they're a species of parasitic catfish! They feed on the blood of other fish, digging inside their gills to find their aortal arteries! Feedings are fortunately rather short, from 30 seconds to 145 seconds.
Payaras
In addition to the sharp, spiky daggers that line their gums, payaras have two elongated fangs that rise from their lower jaws. These fangs can extend a whopping 4 – 6 inches (12.7-15.2 cm), and they’re so big that payaras are born with holes in their upper jaws to house them.

How many hours had passed? Fish didn’t know. The night was still deep and dark, and all the city lights shone too bright to let the stars speak. Tears rolled down her face silently, like an apology she couldn’t bare to say out loud. She was sorry, so sorry. But the hunger... It was so loud. She had ignored it for days, hiding in abandoned basements, shaking, famished.
There was blood everywhere. On her face, on her clothes. She cried, and cried, and cried, and it didn’t make it better. Her thirst was hardly satisfied, she could feel it still growling under her skin. A few stray animals couldn’t quench it. The monster inside her needed more. A lot more.
Everything was atrociously loud around her. She could hear the whole city, and it all became a deafening blur.
“So thirsty...” She whispered to the moon, like a prayer.
But there was no more God for her. She had been spat back from Death, a demon in her flesh.
In the cacophony of the city, she managed to hear footsteps approaching. They were perfectly detached from the chaos. What would happen if someone found her here? What would happen to her?
What would happen to them?
“Don’t come any closer!” She shouted desperately, unsure of who she was trying to protect. “Go away!”
The hands are just awful but this is a vampire fish
Unsung Sirens 18. The vampire-maids can be quite cunning.
