My illustration with the characters of the comic book "Hladnye Vraty" ("Cold Gate") by artist Mystical Buttons. I was also inspired to create this illustration by Crowley's tarot cards, including The Hermit and The Knight of Cups.

The plot of the comic tells about a princely ancient Russian family, which has been served by the vampire Vladislav for several centuries. But since the plot of the comic is not finished yet, when creating the illustration, I had to turn to Nikolai Gogol's story "A terrible Vergeanse". At first glance, Gogol's story has nothing in common with the vampire stories we know, but if you delve into Romanian and Slavik folklore, you will find many similarities.

For example, most often in legends vampires are the cursed relatives of the one they come to. In Gogol's story, we encounter just such a plot, the father of the main character, Sorcener, becomes the undead. We see how this hero commits many crimes throughout the story; wanting to get the love of his daughter, Katerina, the sorcener kills her husband and child. But Nikolai Gogol not only describes the sorcerer as a great sinner, but also shows why this hero became like this.

We will learn the story of the sorcener's curse through the story of bandurist-storyteller who tells the legend of "terrible revenge". "Once upon a time, there were two cossacks, Ivan and Petro, and they lived like brother to brother: they always divided all their wealth in half. But one day Ivan received a rich reward from the king of the capture of the Turkish pasha, and the king gave Ivan land and money. Ivan divided his reward between himself and Petro, but Petro harbored revenge deep in his soul: he became jealous that Ivan received such honours from the king. When the cossacks were travelling to the land granred by king, Petro took reverge on Ivan, he pushed his brother along with his child in the hole and appropriated all the wealth for himself.

When Petro died, God called the two brothers to him and told Ivan to come up with a punishment for Petro. Ivan said that there would be no more pease for his brother, he would not receive the kingdom of heaven, and the last decendant of his family would forever be gnawed by the dead. "You created a terrible execution, man", God replied, and said that Ivan would forever look at the execution he had created for his cruelty.

This "last descendant" was the Sorcerer, but even during his lifetime he had no pease: he was always pursued by a black horseman from the Carpathians, who was the restless brother Ivan.
