I love what they did with the cover art for this special vinyl version of Van Lear Rose by Loretta Lynn. I've loved this album, an unlikely collaboration between Loretta Lynn and Jack White, since it came out in 2004. I'm not one who likes to use the "real music" card in a haughty manner like some music snobs, but if I ever wanted to do that, this album would be my go-to in that argument. It's pure, honest, no-bullshit alt. country goodness. The album is truly country throughout, but some songs veer dangerously close to garage rock while some are as country as any of her best-loved classics. There's not a single bad track on this brief but brilliant album. The songs, all of which she wrote, are breathtaking, the band is hot, and her voice is bold. Loretta Lynn is not a technical singer. Her voice isn't pristine, beautiful, or ornate. Like this album and most of her best loved songs, her voice and technique are honest and no-bullshit. The songs tackle subjects like loneliness, infidelity, faith, and are often autobiographical. Upon it's release, it became her best-selling solo album in years, peaking at #24 on the Billboard 200, her highest peak at the time, since bested by the #19 peak of 2014's Full Circle, and won two Grammys, including Best Country Album. It's still one of the all time top-reviewed albums on Metacritic, at one time being their highest-ranked album. One review called it "a brave unrepeatable effort that speaks to her whole life."
