Backstory: Varania As I may have mentioned before, Varania is ‘Fenris’s real sister’. Her character is predicated on the idea that the Varania we met in DA2 was an impostor - someone sent by Danarius to lure Fenris out of hiding. The red hair and green eyes jogged his memory enough to believe that that was his sister, and in this worldstate Fenris killed her, so she didnt have a chance to reveal it was all a scam. The real Varania’s life was close enough that no red flags would have been raised when Fenris started asking questions. She did in fact apprentice under Magister Ahriman - though, once they realized Fenris had lost his memories, she was effectively his slave, and he treated her absolutely horribly. She managed to get out a number of years before Inquisition - with the help of Dorian, not that he remembers - and found Clan Lavellan, which had a long history of going much further north than they ever let on, specifically for the purpose of helping escaped slaves. Her hair was red at birth, and going with the idea that Fenris’ hair went white due to trauma from the lyrium branding - hers started going white when her magic manifested, had a couple of white streaks in it by the time she got to the Conclave, but it went full white in the Fade. She went south to find her brother after reading Tale of the Champion, figuring that the Conclave might be something Hawke would show up to. Things did not go as planned.
