I wrote this during lunch at work the other day and it’s not part of the story it’s just an idea spawned from it. :posts:flees:

Once every few weeks, Vasquez has to take a shift in the Eavesdropping Room. It’s not always active, just after big incidents with civilian witnesses or participation with other agencies. None of the agents know who they’re listening to, they just have to make sure the tapped calls never reveal anything. Rare does anything come of spending eight hours cycling through people’s voice calls, text messages, and social media posts. The DEO is a boogey man that knows how to keep people quiet.

This time around, Vasquez has a Moral Dilemma. Maggie Sawyer’s voice is recognizable. Maggie is known to Vasquez. Maggie is not a half bad friend, NCPD liaison, or back-up. Vasquez should probably end the tap out of respect. But there is a job to be done, and, unfortunately for Vasquez, Maggie doesn’t sound like she’s following the rules.

"God, the difference I could've made, Jase. I could've slipped away for just five minutes and no one would've known because they'd be focusing on someone else."

"I don't know, Mags, you've made Alex and Lucy sound like they would notice if you were gone."

"Not if a Power Ranger decided to crash a Supergirl party."

"Or maybe especially then." The man on the other end sighed. "We're not having a discussion about your self esteem right now only because I've got to head out in a few minutes. But. Since you called me and not the others, I'll say it: That's our ship, they're our Zords, they're our Power Coins. Zordon will yell at you, at us, all he wants if you use your powers to protect against Cadmus. But that's all he can do. He can't take away your power coin."

"We're supposed to be setting an example for the new team." It was a half hearted protest at best.

"Yeah, and the example you'll be setting is protecting what's yours -responsibly.- You aren't using your powers for everyday problems. When the moment comes, I'm not worried about you abusing your powers."

Maggie took a deep breath and let it huff out over the phone. "Okay. Thanks, Jason."

"Any time. And maybe bring Alex and Lucy to visit soon? Kim won't be able to keep Trini from visiting you for much longer."

"A team reunion would be nice. As long as we don't have to clean out the fish hold again. I reeked for DAYS."

He laughed. "I promise I won't volunteer us to clean out the boat again. Take care."

"Be safe."

The call ended and Vasquez leaned back in the chair. Assistant Director Lane should be informed. Maggie blatantly disobeyed the NDA by speaking about CADMUS and Supergirl. But. Maggie wasn't a threat. Maggie was probably the exact opposite of a threat. The only thing holding Maggie back, it seemed, was being far too used to keeping a secret and some kind of rule against using power in what would be considered frivolous way.

Vasquez should still inform Lucy. If Maggie was talking as if Alex and Lucy wouldn't know who a Power Ranger would be, then Lucy and Alex didn't know about Maggie's identity. But if Maggie found out the DEO was eavesdropping on her....Vasquez didn't think Maggie would be too surprised. Still.

Either way, the recording was soon deleted. Vasquez understood secrets, and how some needed to be kept, protected, at all costs. This one was worth the risk.
