all things considered, oddly enough, the being was living more comfortably now than he ever had before the bombs dropped. by most normal standards, life in the wasteland was hell, but he had found a way to get by well enough --- and, at the very least, he stood a far better chance of getting discovered by curious and nosy human beings. he’d been fortunate enough to stumble upon a well-hidden vault tucked away near a rockslide, abandoned by its original inhabitants and somehow undiscovered by raiders or scavengers.
for him, the place was perfect. it offered shelter, but most importantly, it still had a large pantry full to the brim with preserved food and purified water, meaning he rarely --- if ever --- needed to venture out into the wasteland to forage. for years, there had been no issues --- until, one day, someone found a way to open the vault door and march inside.
as soon as the grinding of the door’s mechanics met the being’s ears, he took up a position in the shadows of one of the storage rooms. it was impossible, in this position, to get a good look at the intruder without revealing himself, but the footsteps were a clear enough indication of the man’s position.
