A letter to Maven Calore

I'm sorry for what you've had to go through.

No kid should've had lived what you did.

No kid should have to wonder if they were smart, strong or good enough to be loved.

No one should wonder if what they were doing was the right thing to deserve the love of their father.

And definely, not a single person should have to change in order to achieve their mother's dreams and goals.

You had to be the one to suffer all of that, Maven.

I honestly wonder how Maven would have been like if Thomas had lived. Like, obviously, he’d still be pretty screwed up from how much Elara messed with his head, but I think Thomas was good for him and clearly helped him a lot (not to mention, unlike with Mare, this relationship wouldn’t have become obsessive and abusive). With his help, he could have even eventually tried to break free of his mother’s control. Could you imagine how different the books might have been if like how Evangeline had Elane, Maven had Thomas at his side while trying to keep anyone from finding out (not an easy task when his mother’s a Whisper). 

It is canon that Maven’s grandfather was gay and had his consort and a wife to carry the bloodline. Elara wouldn’t let that go, though, since it’s also canon she had issues with that, and she’s always in Maven’s head. Plus, a red and a silver prince...the secondborn to be exact? Nah, I see literally no one taking it well except maybe, MAYBE Cal. I don’t know why but I think I honestly would have been interested to see that romance play out along with Mare and Cal’s (Marecal’s relationship is so complicated, like they both know what the other represents and they both kind of resent each other and yet can’t let go of each other). 

Like, would Mare figure it out after a while since she’s both observatory and oblivious at the same time? Instead of an unhealthy and abusive relationship between them, would we have gotten a sort-of, complicated friendship (plus, I’d like to see more male-female friendships in YA that don’t turn into the guy friend being secretly in love with the mc) since Mare’s one of the few people Maven actually somewhat lets in and likes? Would she like Thomas since they’re both Reds with a secret trying not to get caught (and heads over heels for a silver prince that will probably be the death of them), being so close yet so far from the ones they’ve fallen for, and, hell, you could put in the AU I heard of Thomas being a Newblood to explain how he survived to add in their similarities (now that I think about it, that’s probably why Maven became so obsessed with her in the first place, because he reminded her of Thomas and he latched on to that.). Would Maven be listening to Elara’s orders to infiltrate the Scarlet Guard to protect Thomas? Would Maven join the Scarlet Guard for real with Thomas’ insistence or to protect him?

In Glass Sword, if Maven stays evil, would he have Thomas as his remaining tether to the light? Would Thomas leave Maven to join the Scarlet Guard because he’s scared of what Maven’s become? If he stays, would Maven try to change things for him to make him happy and accidentally become a better king to Reds than his father while still being the bad guy? I’d even settle for them just being an evil power couple willing to do anything for each other in a healthy and loving relationship with a healthy dose of murder, spying, and manipulation of others, Thomas joining the Guard to spy for Maven while he creates an equality of sorts between Silvers and Reds through intimidation and tyranny. Also, it’d be kind of amusing for Maven to be using Evangeline as a beard only to find out in the next book she’s using him as one, too.

I don’t know, there are so many ways my mind can go with Maven having someone on his side who might actually be able to keep him sane. Thomas was the one person Maven ever had a normal, untouched relationship with and probably ever will have, so Thomaven is a ship whose backstory I'm intrigued in, I’d love to know more about Thomas, and frankly, I just want to see my boys happy. I have read through almost all I can find on Ao3, and I’ve only found 3, THREE fics with Thomas alive that takes place in the Red Queen universe that’s not in a modern setting, and of the three, one’s a oneshot and the other two are incomplete. Could someone PLEASE write a fic with at least one of these concepts, because if not, I’m probably going to end up doing it myself and I have WAY too many WIPs! I would literally sell my soul for a story of these two with all the RQ drama that comes with it!
