“too dumb not to run away../ I'm not a native speaker, German actually, but very much used to English. I did automatically understand the sentence as intended as in: Steve doesn't run away. Probably because German has also in dialect the trend to bend rules to place more emphasis. Like: at all never not. :-) The sentences grammatic clashes with emotional perception. Which interpretation depends on the brain structure: emotional or logical reading. :-)

This is a very timely ask, as I was just chatting with @vaysh11 about the German translation of this line! She says it is dubbed as:

“Dem kleinen Kerl aus Brooklyn, der zu dumm war, vor ‘nem Kampf wegzulaufen, dem folge ich.”

She points out that unlike the English version, there are no negatives, and the literal re-translation into English is: The little guy from Brooklyn who was too dumb to run from a fight, I am following him.

So this would be more like what @dsudis wanted the English to be :) I’m curious if it would be grammatical to add a negative in the German translation, similar to the way it is in the English version.

And if it is grammatical to do that, would it change the meaning at all, or introduce any ambiguity that you could tell?
