“What Ramaswamy represents, however, is a troubling potential future for the Republican Party. I have written extensively about the trajectory of the GOP. The rot symbolized by Trump runs throughout the entire Republican Party. There are no true principles. They do not believe in small government or fiscal or social conservatism. Profit through worsening corruption and pursuit of power by any means are their only driving forces. The GOP has become little more than a political relations front for their billionaire donors as they dismantle democracy.”
— The Ugly Future of the GOP: Vivek Ramaswamy and the Evolution of Cruelty and Greed
“he GOP has become little more than a political relations front for their billionaire donors as they dismantle democracy.” And don’t forget the white supremacy.
Wonder Woman
This was before they invented Chris Evans, but I'll still accept the title.
Look y'all, this reveal means so much to me. So many times in movies these days there are big reveals for the audience’s benefit that mean absolutely nothing in the context of the story or to the characters in it. I’m talking the Thanos cameo in the Avengers’ stinger, I’m talking Benedict CumberKhan in Star Trek, I’m talking about every hackneyed “This character is actually this other character” when in universe nobody knows nor cares about their true identity.
But here? This reveal? This is a Big Reveal for us, Peter B Parker, and Miles, all on different levels. We and Peter both know Doc Ock is a portly dude, not a woman. We know the name Octavius… Otto Octavius. But when she says her name is Olivia Octavius we’re clued in to the fact that Doctor Octopus is a woman in this universe. And she has Peter captive.
Miles, if he was paying attention in science class earlier in the movie, would have known her name was Olivia Octavius, but that doesn’t mean anything to him, why would it? Liv has apparently been very good about keeping her supervillainy a secret. She’s in educational videos shown in high-schools. So to Miles, the reveal here is this scientist lady, who he knew enough about to know was the head scientist at Alchemax, is a supervillain. He gets the reveal a second or two after Peter.
And the movie? It was dropping hints the entire time, confident in our expectations blinding is to the truth. Olivia’s name was partially visible when Miles got to science class. Her glasses are octagonal. The lights in her lab are octagonal. We know she’s working with the Kingpin. Why wouldn’t she be a supervillain? Because she’s hot? Hell, Peter even says he needs to reexamine his internal biases. Maybe he was telling us that we should too.
It’s a reveal for us, and for our heroes. It means something, both in-universe and out. And that makes it infinitely better than other similar reveals.
Is tumblr glitching? I just got a notification that someone had mentioned me in a post, but that post/mention was from 2016? And it doesn't seem like anyone had recently interacted with that post. And the OP rarely posts here at all anymore. Weird.

I’m out here buying tshirts and pants like a chump while some people are just wearing the world’s best rectangles
Pre-manufacturing cultures will really be like, here is the most elegant and gorgeous outfit you can imagine, and it’s achieved entirely with rectangles, ropes, and pins.
Over and over again, across the world, in cultures that never even knew of each others’ existences. Just, rectangles, knots, and pins. And I love that for them.
The world’s best rectangles. Yes
Please retire the "we are made of stardust" phrase I am so tired of it
Stars are made of flesh
I change my mind bring back the original phrase
If I remember correctly, elements heavier than iron are only created when a star dies.
This is interesting because 1) it places a lower bound on when life can evolve, and when life is most likely to evolve, assuming any of a number of certain chemical compositions are necessary and 2) it means that a significant portion of the matter around us was forged by the death of a star.
Stars, when they die, can create new elements and I think that's cool as fuck.
I looked it up, actually it's like this:
Helium and Hydrogen were created by the Big Bang.
Elements from Helium up to Iron are created by stars through nuclear fusion during their lifetimes (In a process called Stellar Nucleosynthesis)
And elements heavier than iron cannot be created except by Supernova Nucleosynthesis, by the collapse and death of a star, and elements from silicon through iron still are mainly created by Supernova Nucleosynthesis, since stars big enough to create them by fusion in life are pretty rare
The stardust makes you alive! It's neat.
This! Yes!
Okay, so, this is a thing we actually know a bit about.
While what you've brought up is the leading theory, and has been for a good while, there are some inconsistencies -- particularly with the far end of the stable elements and the radioactive elements. The amounts produced in Supernova Nucleosynthesis would be far too low to actually account for the amounts seen in the universe.
So, how were they created?
The best theory we have is collisions between neutron stars.
When two neutron stars collide, they produce a supernova with the required energy density to create those ultraheavy elements, which means that not only are you made of stardust, if this theory is correct, you are made of stardust that was released when two of the most violent, extreme objects in the universe collided, possibly billions of years ago, hundreds of millions of lightyears away.
You are the wreckage of a violent multi-star pileup
Ta-daaa!!! Isn’t this so fucking cool???
This is very fucking cool.
I know for sure that H, C, N, O, F, Na, Mg, P, S, Cl, K, Ca, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn are all vital elements in compounds that make up our bodies and our foods. Possibly Li, Be, B, Al, and Si too, but I'm not as sure.
There are probably others -- I am not a biologist. But the only element in purple (made by merging neutron stars) that I recognize as being essential to human life is Iodine (atomic number 53).
Can someone with more knowledge say if there are other heavy elements crucial to life?
(Several of the other ones in purple, like lead, are actively poisonous to humans so I am very curious to know.)
when your art program’s closing message hits you straight in the heart and makes you stop and contemplate the state of it all
because of the huge response to this post, I decided to make a version of the art that includes the text
I’ve also uploaded this design to INPRNT, and all sales proceeds will be donated to environmental and humanitarian charities!
this is still going around with the old dead links - please help me share this version
Or just go to browse and hang out! I promise it will be inspiring :)
It’s also a lot easier to do research in a library; sure, it’s one thing to have internet access, but it’s another to have wifi access to databases and books on the topic an approximate two minute walk away.
I had this idea for a looping animation in which a single dot has a pretty long loop, but the animation as a whole is much shorter. Because of the repetition this animation is only 1 second long!
THIS GIF IS ONE SECOND LONG
The breadsticks thing to me is hilarious I think it must be another Europe/America thing bc my whole life ‘breadsticks’ have been these hard crunchy thin stick things you buy them at the supermarket and it says breadsticks on the box Never in my life has anyone around me referred to an actual stick of bread as a breadstick lmao But then we don’t have Olive Garden either
wait, that’s not what they’re talking about?
Are you telling me this meme is not about grissini? My life is a lie!
I… did wonder why there would be such a focus on going to somewhere with unlimited dry wheat twigs. Googling ‘olive garden breadsticks’ does seem to suggest a tastier thing.
Huh.
this changes everything
I mean, I thought it was odd that they everyone was so excited about breadsticks… but then I thought, well, it’s America…
Wait they’re talking about actual bread???
grissini:
breadsticks:
… I want American breadsticks. ;_;
@goodbyecassiel - this is the Great Breadstick Misunderstanding, companion to the Epic Lemonade Confusion post
@charlottedabookworm my life is a lie
Omfg same
wtaf why did nobody ever tell us they were talking about actual bread?!?!
We literally did tell you. We. We used the word BREAD.
but………… those aren’t breadsticks!
They are sticks.
Of bread.
🤷♂️
We didn’t know you had breadtwigs instead.
OH the joke is funnier than previously thought because those are bigger and therefore it would be harder and more socially awkward to shove them into your purse! Lol
I feel like this is explaining a joke to Vulcans who are totally game to try humor, and I’m loving it.
Aug 19, 2023—Shot putter Joe Kovacs won his fifth world medal today, finishing third at the World Championships at the National Athletics Centre in Hungary.
So what this paint company does is take iron pollution from abandoned mines that are polluting soils and rivers and makes iron based red pigment paints out of it.
Basically they realized hey no one's cleaning this shit up, it's polluting the streams, killing all the fish, making the water undrinkable and there's a huge market for it so why not make money by cleaning it the fuck up?
They remove this stuff by the industrial bucket load from the rivers. The idea is if it's in a painting, if it's in your home, it's not poisoning wildlife.
anyway its cool as shit, please support tf out of these people https://gamblinstore.com/reclaimed-earth-colors-set/
feeling normal about this also
I was trying to see it in the arrangement of stars and galaxies, but it's just. A fucking. It's a fucking. Question mark. Floating in space. Not a constellation, just a floating goddamn question mark. I want to scream.
