Kavrillia’s oceans are filled with enormous sea monsters called grekks. As human children are fascinated by (and occasionally afraid of) dinosaurs, so are Kavrillian children enchanted by their own planet’s giant killer beasts.
In other words, a plush grekk is the perfect thing to terrorize your baby brother with...at least according to Princess Vazali. Twitchy will have nightmares for weeks.
The primary beast of burden for Kavrillians is a large, flightless bird called the skirak. They are commonly found in various shades of red and blue. White skiraks are quite rare, and usually reserved for ceremonial occasions.
Above, Empress Vazali takes a ride on a more common-colored specimen.
Behold, my first formal attempt at art since 2003.
I didn’t bother to dig out my old Prismacolor pencils or other art supplies, so this was just done on printer paper with a felt tip pen and Crayola colored pencils. Still, I was pleasantly surprised to find my art skills hadn’t atrophied as much as I thought they had.
With fan art, there’s always someone out there who can draw X character better than you, so it’s easy to get discouraged. But (barring commissioning other artists, which I did a couple times a loooong time ago) if I want to see my own original universe come to life, I have to draw it myself. So I did.
I was never a serious artist, but I doodled and drew my entire life until I graduated college, then lost my motivation. There were lots of reasons for my giving it up: comparing myself unfavorably to better artists online, being tired of my RL artist friend being more critical than supportive, the lack of doodling time when I wasn’t in school anymore, choosing to concentrate more on my writing, the trauma of losing a close family member after a long illness, and the timesink of MMOs.
I don’t know that I’m going to suddenly get back into drawing like I used to, but for whatever reason I felt like picking up colored pencils again for the first time in over fifteen years, and this happened. :)
.
P.S. If you’re a mediocre artist and you’re designing your own species, give them hands with only a thumb and no fingers! Boom, no need to learn to draw hands properly! *insert devious laughter here*

I took a more light-handed approach to the outlining on this one, partly out of laziness and partly out of curiosity, since it had been a while since I did a pic this way.
