"I wish I got paid for doing nothing!" An older man said this to my assistance dog after I rewarded her with a treat. And I know he didn't mean any harm, a lot of people are misinformed on assistance dogs, but it was frustrating.

My dog was actively tasking. She was blocking, which provides space for the handler (me). I typically use it in crowded settings or in lines, like this scenario. I was rewarding her for staying in position as someone behind me put spacial pressure on her.

But even if she hadn't been tasking at the time and she was in a heel, there are a lot of things I could've been rewarding her for: ignoring the dog straining towards her the next lane over, resisting the smells of the snacks by the register, not soliciting attention from the other customers that walked by, or even ignoring the man that was talking to her!

My point is, there is so much that goes into these dogs, that even them "doing nothing" is more complicated than you think.
