Celebrating Freedom: Juneteenth and Emancipation Day Commemorations

Happy Juneteenth! You probably know Juneteenth began in Texas, but Emancipation Days have been celebrated on several different dates--like this April 3, 1905 Emancipation Day parade in Richmond, Virginia. Curious to know why April 3? And how did the white press report the commemoration?

Southern women speak out against lynching, and about the need for state anti-rape laws. It would be years before their goals were realized.

This pamphlet was published by the Commission on Interracial Cooperation, a ground-breaking civil rights group formed in 1919 to oppose lynching, mob violence, and peonage (debt slavery), and to educate white southerners about the worst aspects of racial abuse.

You can read the statements of Southern white women from Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia. Several CIC pamphlets may be found in the Social Welfare History Image Portal.

Listen to their stories: feminist activism in Virginia from the 1970s to early 2000′s 

The Virginia Feminist Oral History Project collects interviews with women involved in second-wave feminism and related activism in Virginia.  These oral histories also fill a gap in the written historical record by documenting the women's personal reflections and perspectives on how they became feminists, their relationships with other activists, and the relationships between women and various organizations that fought for women’s rights.  http://bit.ly/VaFemOH

The 34th edition of the Little Red Songbook, also known as I.W.W. Songs or Songs of the Industrial Workers of the World. The book is a compilation of tunes, hymns, and songs used by the Industrial Workers of the World (I.W.W.) to help build morale, promote solidarity and lift the spirits of the working-class.
