Venom in real life 😂😂
Are you happy with being a veterinarian? And do you have a lot of time for yourself?
It’s such a difficult question to answer. I mean, it really is.
I used to partake in the late night philosophical discussion with my fellow vet students about what it meant to be ‘happy’, and our conclusion was that if you had to wonder about this question, then you probably didn’t know.
So when I am asked if I am ‘happy being a vet’, or ‘what makes you keen to get out of bed and go to work every day’, or those sort of questions and I hesitate to answer, I wonder if perhaps I am not completely happy.
Yet I can’t possibly imagine doing anything else. I can’t possibly imagine giving it up. I will be a vet until the day I die. There have been times when it has nearly been the death of me, and the toll on our mental health as a profession is phenomenal, but I would not change it at all.
I often wonder, in my more fanciful moods, whether I have indeed sold my soul to become a vet, and being a vet will consume me. And I still wouldn’t change it.
As for free time, I do have more than wen I was a final year vet student because I spend less time studying, but it doesn’t feel like enough. I’m tired all the time, I’m probably not allowing myself enough ‘non-vet’ brain time. I have difficulty setting boundaries. I probably am overworking myself, in part from hanging around and comparing myself to other high achieving individuals who are also overworking themselves, and normalizing such behavior.
I have reduced my emergency shifts, but there’s a balance somewhere that I haven’t quite figures out.
