summary: Seungcheol gets a late-night call to pick you up after you’ve had too much to drink.
warnings: food and alchol mention.
Seungcheol groaned in annoyance at the ringing of his phone. He often had trouble sleeping, and the ringtone had interrupted him just as he was about to finally drift off. He mentally cursed himself for forgetting to put his phone on silent and muttered under his breath instead of swearing at whoever decided to call him in the middle of the night.
He reached out towards the bedside table and grabbed his phone, frowning when he saw “y/n❣️”on the screen, but he didn’t hesitate to answer the call.
«Hello?» he said, bringing the phone to his ear.
«Am I speaking with Cheollie? Sorry for calling so late, but I found your number in the recent contacts. Y/N is drunk, and you’d better come pick her up».
Seungcheol asked for the address to be sent via message before hanging up. He sighed, a mixture of concern and resignation settling in his chest. Then, he quickly put on his shoes and threw on a jacket over his pajamas, rushing out to the bar.
Twenty minutes later, he parked his car and saw you sitting on a bench, your head resting on the lap of someone he recognized as one of your coworkers, with a guy standing nearby.
His heart tightened at the sight. You looked so small, so vulnerable, and the fact that it was him you called—even indirectly—made something stir inside him. He approached and greeted them politely. The guy greeted him back and introduced himself as your coworker’s brother, also there to help with the drunken situation.
«Why are you outside? It’s cold» he said disapprovingly as he took off his jacket and placed it over your shoulders.
«They refused to wait inside. It’s hard to convince two drunk girls. You can imagine the scene» the guy replied as Seungcheol knelt down beside you and gently shook you.
You opened your eyes and sat up. «Cheollie? What are you doing here?» you asked, confused, rubbing your eyes.
«I’d say you’re in no condition to get home on your own» he replied before thanking your friend and her brother.
«Let’s go» Seungcheol supported you as you stood up, and you both started walking towards his car.
«I don’t want to get in!» you protested, stomping your feet.
«Why?» he asked as he opened the passenger door.
«I don’t like your car. I’ll call a taxi».
The lie tasted bitter on your tongue, but you couldn’t admit that you were terrified of being close to him right now, after everything.
«What’s wrong with my car?» he crossed his arms over his chest, looking at you with an amused expression.
«It smells, and it makes me dizzy» you managed to blurt out, unable to come up with a better excuse.
«I assure you it doesn’t smell, and I’ll drive slowly so you don’t feel sick» he said, placing his hands on your hips and gently guiding you towards the car «And I’ll buy you your favorite corndog».
«Really? Pinky promise?» you settled into the front seat, your stomach already growling at the thought of food.
«Yes, I swear» he chuckled, leaning over to buckle your seatbelt before getting into the driver’s seat and starting the car.
You felt confused, unsure if it was the alcohol, his closeness, the scent of his jacket on you, or his cologne that filled the car. You inhaled deeply, trying to steady yourself, but his scent only made your heart race faster. Probably all four.
You sighed and rested your head against the seat, closing your eyes. «I’m tired» you whispered.
«Should we skip the corndog and go straight home?»
«No!» you yelled, turning towards him as he stopped at a red light «You promised!» you narrowed your eyes and pouted.
Cheol chuckled, nodding his head before turning his attention back to the road. A few meters ahead, you spotted the kiosk where you usually went.
«Wait here, okay?» he said as he pulled over to the curb.
«Don’t forget the ketchup».
«I know your favorite, darling» he replied as he unbuckled his seatbelt, smiling at you, his dimple making your heart melt.
He leaned over from his seat, and you felt his hand on your hip. Your breath caught, every nerve ending suddenly aware of him. Your heart began to race.
«I’ll be right back» he said, planting a quick kiss on your cheek before taking his wallet out of the jacket pocket you were still wearing.
You watched in a daze as he walked towards the kiosk.
You placed a hand over your heart as if trying to calm its frantic beating.
Soon after, he returned to the car and handed you the cardboard box with the corndog, topped with ketchup just how you liked it.
You lifted it off the wooden skewer and took a small bite. It was delicious, but now your stomach was in knots, and you didn’t feel as hungry as before. In contrast, Cheol was already halfway through his and kept glancing at you.
«Stop staring at me» you muttered softly, noticing from the corner of your eye that he had finished eating and was wiping his lips with a napkin.
«What’s wrong? You usually devour it before I do» he teased, taking a sip of his coke zero before placing it in the cup holder between your seats.
Normally, you’d slap his arm or fire back with a witty remark, but this time you remained silent, staring at the food as you closed it up and placed it near the drink. Your thoughts were swirling—how had things changed so much between you two? Could you really go back to being just friends after tonight?
«Hey, are you okay?» he asked, genuinely concerned.
«I like you» you blurted out without thinking, simply voicing your thoughts. The alcohol probably hadn’t worn off yet and only fueled your instincts. «I like you so much, Cheollie».
He stayed silent, but you could feel his gaze on you.
«You always take care of me, and then you look at me like that… How am I not supposed to fall in love with you?» you said, turning to face him. «Aigoo*, stop making my heart beat so fast! Not being able to tell you is driving me crazy!»
«But didn’t you just tell me?» he replied, trying to hide a smile.
«No! It doesn’t count when I’m drunk. I want to tell you that I really like you, but I can’t» you said without thinking about your answers, the alcohol taking control.
«Why can’t you?»
«Oh gosh, you’d reject me, and I can’t lose you—you’re my best friend» you wrapped your arms around yourself. God, the scent of his jacket was overwhelming, making you lose your mind.
He couldn’t hold back his smile any longer, his dimple reappearing on his cheek as he looked at you tenderly.
«Come here».
You tilted your head in confusion. Come here? You were literally sitting right next to him in his car, but you still leaned closer to him.
Cheol quickly moved towards your face, so fast that for a moment, you thought the light touch of his lips on yours was just your imagination.
«Repeat what you said tomorrow when you’re sober, okay?» he whispered, still so close that you could feel his breath against yours.
