Vegan, plant based or whatever you are
***Disclaimer - I don’t care if you eat meat or not. Each their own. If you have any issues with this please get off my blog. I do not tolerate bullies or negativity***
Recently I have switched over to a plant based lifestyle due to health issues. This has been a pretty easy transition since we don’t eat dairy in our house due to my daughter being lactose intolerant. Of course I’m human and I slip up, I make mistakes. Recently though I have been wanting to be stricter on my plant based choice.
Before plant based I was on Keto and I became super sick. Constant diarrhea, nausea, bloating and fatigue. Had no energy whatsoever. ***Again if it works for you, good. This is just my personal journey***. I did some research and switched over to a plant based diet and in a week all my issues disappeared. I had more energy than I ever had before. At first it was hard because of the carb discussion. Carbs are bad. Don’t eat carbs. But I was eating healthy carbs from fruits, veggies, beans, nuts, seed and whole grains. I wasn’t snacking on white bread, white pasta, junk food filled carbs. I stay away from process food as much as possible. On occasion I would buy the plant based meats like burgers or sausage but I don’t like doing that because I feel like they are processed and unhealthy in a sense. Preservatives still need to be added to and honestly I am wanting to fuel my body with as much clean food as possible. Plus I have an amazing black bean burger recipe.
Of course I did a lot of research. Read articles, read books, and watch documentaries. The Game Changer is an amazing one if anyone is interested. I joined Facebook support groups and watched YouTube videos. I really threw myself into this. I wanted to make sure I was making the right choice for myself. I felt good eating this way, for the first time in 4 months I didn’t have diarrhea or throwing up. Yes I went to the doctor and got tested and scans. I wanted to research so I knew how to do this the right way and not eat junk food. I wanted to make sure that I was getting all my needed vitamins and nutrients. I even asked friends who made the switch and got their advice.
During my research I noticed that a lot of people stated they couldn’t afford to go vegan or it was too expensive. I noticed a huge drop in my grocery bill from not buying animal product. My cart was filled with beans, whole wheat products and produce. Fresh produce can get expensive but that’s why you buy in season items and frozen is a good alternative. I prefer fresh but hey I’ll get down with a bag of frozen veggies or fruit. I noticed that a lot of new vegans buy a lot of the fake meat and fake cheeses. This stuff can add up, it’s pretty damn expensive honestly. When a pack of vegan burgers is almost $6 for 4 patties. Or the fake egg stuff is almost $10. This stuff adds up when you can easily make scrambled eggs with canned chickpeas or chickpea flour.
Is this just me? Am I the only one that feels going plant based if done right is actually super inexpensive. Buy in season, beans and whole wheat products will be your best friend. Frozen veggies or fruit are amazing as well. I hope this doesn’t come across judgemental. I’m just curious what anyone else thinks. I’m still new and learning and I slip up. But it gets easier over time.

Dear Vegans of tumblr,
I have a question, how would eating a dead squirrel off the side of the road compair to eating a hamburger?
Just wondering.
So, I'm considering introducing some plant-based milks into my diet and, wow. There are a lot more options than there were when I last looked! Pea protien, oat, and hemp milks seem like the most sustainable options. Since you're vegan, do you have any experience with these and would you recommend any?
Oooh, and now it’ll be revealed I’m a bad vegan. I didn’t so much replace milk as just eliminate it entirely. I never really enjoyed cow milk, so vegan milk just isn’t something I think about often.
When I do, I tend to air on coconut milk which is supposed to be sustainable but who knows anymore. If not in the litre containers, there are cans and powders widely available.
I’ve never tried pea protein milk. Hemp left a bad taste in my mouth, but I can’t remember if it was flavoured or straight hemp – that may be a factor.
I guess it depends on what you intend to use it for – if it’s just baking, anything could work. But if you’re a fan of cereal or something where you’ll be drinking it outright, you may need to do some taste-testing.
Funny though, I just watched a video about how easy it is to make your own oat milk. Essentially, all you need is cheese cloth, a good blender, and some time to soak the oats. You can make small batches that last ~5 days.Hope you don’t mind if I post publicly – maybe someone else will have a better answer!
A question to all my vegan followers and whatsoever.
IS THERE ANY MILK THAT DOESN’T COME FROM ANIMALS BUT ALSO DOESN’T TASTE LIKE SHIT??
I love milk but I can’t drink it because the hormones in it result in me gaining 26873418 pimples after taking like three sips of it so I’m desperately searching for something to give me the taste I’m craving.
I tried coconut milk and it’s much too thin and thus too tasteless for me,
Soy milk smells and looks like vomit and I tried, I really tried but I just can’t swallow more than three sips at a time, it’s just so impossibly nasty, I’m full of respect for people who actually drink it on daily basis ;;
Then there’s rice milk that is.... kinda okay in taste? It’s deffo too sweet for me and also too thin but I can at least swallow it?
And I still have to try almond milk but then what?
Are there any other types of milk I can try or like any milk that resembles cow milk (god, if there were any, I would cry myself to death, pls say there’s any). Please help me, I don’t want to look like a monster but I also don’t want to never drink milk again ;;
Genuine Curiosity: Vegans, please help!
So I keep seeing on my dash “vegan xyz” (meat and cheese specifically). What is vegan cheese made out of? Or like a “vegan taco meat.” I am genuinely curious because maybe if I knew what it was I’d eat it!! As a new vegetarian I would love for more true vegan substitutes. Thanks!
Would the food from Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs be Vegan-Friendly since the food came from molecules and not animals?
Can vegans eat bugs? Genuine question because things like cola have dye from bugs in, but they’re vegan, so could you eat like meal worms as a source of protein?
