What I’ve learned about being vegan in college
It’s hard. I don’t want to discourage anyone but it’s the truth. I am the only vegan I know in my college and going out to eat becomes a challenge in itself. My classmates like going to places like Starbucks, McDonald’s, cafés and other fast food stores. Which I understand it’s cheap, fast and it tastes good. The problem is that more often than not, I end up eating fries or the most depressing salad I’ve ever seen. Which sincerely, I better just pass. So I stopped going.
Always be prepared. It took me some time (years) to actually get this one going. Meal prep might sound very time-consuming but it actually isn’t!!! I encourage all of you to start meal prepping because it’ll save you money and you know what you’re putting in your body. I’ve learned that it’s also a very good way to talk with others about veganism. People often look at my lunch box and are surprised at what I have there. Most people think vegans only eat sad salads. So when they see amazing vegan pastas, soups, buddha bowls, rice, tofu, vurgers, sandwiches, they all get very surprised at the aromas, how much I eat and the aesthetics of it. They often realise they just eat the same thing over and over again and are curious about trying vegan food.
It helps me focus in my studies. Now, I haven’t seen many studyblrs talking about how your eating habits can impact your performance at school. And I want to take a moment for us all to realise how important eating well is for us! In my case after I started cooking my food and being more mindful about what I put in my body I started to see some changes. Not only did I feel lighter, I also felt energized. I stopped feeling so tired and I the amount of naps I took throughout the day decreased dramatically. Thus giving me more time and energy to focus on my studies. My grades also went up, although that is likely due to several changes I was making at the same time but I believe eating healthy was a strong contributor to my performance.
I also felt like going to class because I felt confident in myself. I am bound to sweat and my body odor prior turning vegan was enough to make a rat run away. But it all disappeared after and now I can go out without deodorant (don’t do that tho. Always wear deodorant!!!). My face is became clearer and I maintain my bodyweight. And all these small physical changes have given me more confidence to talk to my professors, to my classmates. I know it might sound superficial but it’s very nice talking to someone without them making a strange face by the way you smell. Idk what kinda magic there was behind it but it disappeared. I’m not complaining.
