After Tragedy, NHL’s Newest Franchise Steps Up

In the wake of Sunday night’s mass shooting in Las Vegas, which began mere minutes after the Vegas Golden Knights finished their final preseason game at T-Mobile arena, only a block away from the Mandalay Bay, the city’s newest residents have stepped up to support their local community. On Monday, majority owner Bill Foley called the shooting “a terrible tragedy” and added that “there’s no explanation for it”. He also ensured that the “organization will stand with the people of Las Vegas and give whatever support is needed”.

In addition to cancelling an event scheduled for 6 pm today, at which the team was to unveil its mascots, Foley and the Knights put their money where their mouths are by announcing a joint donation of $300,000 with the NHL to support victims and first responders. Players will be making public appearances in support of victims and first responders as well.

Across the league, under the banner “Vegas United”, clubs and players will be honoring victims during season-opening games this week. Per NHL.com:

We Are Vegas.

The amount of love that has followed this utter tragedy is amazing... unbelievably completely entirely amazing. The kindness, compassion, and love that we have for each other and the city is coming across all platforms: the people waiting in 8 hour lines to donate blood, people donating to those in line waiting to donate blood, donations piling up by the bags at the fire station, people donating time to carry and sort everything... A smile, a hug, a nod, and just... The amount of love that is pouring out of everyone. I am so proud to call Las Vegas and Nevada home. 

I am so grateful today for the most mundane things in my day because I've come to realize that those moments are truly the precious moments that should be cherished everyday. Because it can all be stripped away against your will... Because so many will never get to hug their families again... So many didn't even get a chance to say goodbye or thank you or I love you. 

I am so grateful that I was able to hug my mom and bring her food. I am so grateful for the chance to chat with my sister throughout the day. For my dear friends from work. For the luxury to sit down and eat. 

Vegas, we are in this together for the long haul...!! It isn't just donating today and tomorrow and volunteering today and tomorrow... I heard on the radio that blood donated today is only good until Saturday... We start and finish together as a single community.
