The assumption that vegan parents force their kids to be vegan is one of those things that I think really shows the assumptions and blindspots that people actually have about what it means to be vegan. Namely that:
Plant based eating is unnatural, insufficient or harmful to childrens development.
Veganism is just matter of plant based eating, rather than a set of ethical beliefs.
Not eating animal flesh, milk, byproducts etc. is the same thing as depravation. Consumption of animals is the default.
Vegan parents are intentionally and maliciously inflicting this depravation on their children. Rather than just, y'know, feeding them the same groceries that they buy for themselves.
No child would ever willingly be vegan.
Parents who eat any (and every) kind of diet can abuse their power and instill harmful ideas and disordered eating in their kids. And if a parent does have dietary restrictions (of any kind) it's a good idea for them to talk to a dietician/pediatrician about how to make sure their kids get the nutrients they need.
But vegans don't force their kids into veganism any more than Muslim parents force their kids to abstain from pork.
Veganism isn't some arbitrary list of rules. It's rooted in very real moral concern. It's about not financially supporting industries that buy and sell slaughtered animals. It's about not viewing animals as commodities.
I have absolutely zero interest in ever being a parent. But the way people frame vegan parents this way feels so dishonest and unfair.
