The acephobia surrounding Lucanis now isn’t surprising, but damn I am so tired

God forbid a character isn’t made to cater to the audience at large, huh?

Ace people clearly aren’t “in reality,” or “living.” Oh, and we’re clearly not “ordinary,” right?

The entitlement some people have is truly staggering. Lucanis’s writer confirmed that he was written to be a demisexual/demiromantic virgin. If something about his character and/or romance dissuades you from liking him, then consider that he’s not the right romance option for you OR go to AO3 and dunk yourself in fanfics where he’s the epitome of the Spanish Lover™️ trope.

The issue here is a player wanting to project onto Rook and being upset that their Rook doesn’t get the attention or romance that they personally want. Which, fine, we can’t help what we feel. But this isn’t the writers’ fault (this poster was in damn near every one of Mary Kirby’s posts complaining about Lucanis not being passionate and etc.) And it’s not an excuse to express wanting to take representation away from a group for which representation was purposely given.

*To be clear, I’m not commenting on the substance of his romance or number of lines or on the Neve/Lucanis vs Rook/Lucanis debate

I’m speaking specifically to the acephobia that has emerged after learning that he is, indeed, demi, something that ace people suspected already and related to

'It's just a game'

It's not.

I'm putting off the Jaws of Hakkon DAI DLC because I need it for reference to the start of Act 2 of my fic and I don't wanna write rn but I'm ALSO putting off a late game main quest because I've decided I'm gonna sacrifice Hawke. Hawke is the main character of DA2. I played all of DA2 knowing I'd kill her in DAI.

The games… until Veilguard, choices MATTERED. That's what they took from us. That didn't always implement choice / consequences perfectly (I'm side-eyeing ME3 pre-epilogue fix) but they did MATTER. Just take this one thing. In DA2, you play Hawke. Depending on if you choose mage or not one of their younger siblings dies in the prologue (twin younger siblings, Carver - a warrior and Bethany - a mage). I played mage this go round so Bethany died. Later you can save the surviving sibling or else they die tragically. I chose to be unable to save Carver. Then Hawke's mom dies - taken by a serial killer you track in act 1&2 but can't stop. In late game DAI you import your Hawke. Full character creation screen if you choose, and I did. I imported my world state so here is my Hawke, an orphan, all siblings dead, her love is a terrorist who blew up a church (I romanced Anders) And usually I save Hawke. We enter the Fade and fight our way out and there's an option where you have Hawke and one of 3 possible others with you (based on what happened in the very first game. If Alistair wasn't made king and didn't die in Origins, he's here. If you chose the corrupt Loghain over Alistair in Origins, he's here. Always I have option 3: Stroud. A random nobody introduced in the end of the second game because I always make Alistair king). This time I'm gonna let Hawke sacrifice herself. Knowing Varric, a main character introduced in DA2 and again a main companion in DAI, is going to mourn. Anders will mourn.

THAT is what veilguard took from me. From all of us. What I did in Origins informed who goes into the Fade for the last time in DAI. Who I loved and played as in DA2 fights alongside me.

This is why the only thing that made me cry in Veilguard is they killed Varric then paraded around his ghost until the end

And I know this is the choice this Hawke would make, but I don't want to lose her.

It's just a game - but it's not. I've been playing since DA2 came out (and played Origins retroactively). It's been over a decade. Sure DA2 has the same repetitive level designs that ME1 has (I have every random planet base layout memorized, this wasn't unique to DA). But I love the lore, the characters, the choice.

They took my choice away.

I wonder if the directors working on Veilguard had considered that if the people who played the previous Dragon Age games wanted a "cosy game", then we wouldn't be playing Dragon Age?

We would be playing one of the many generic high fantasy games that already exist, where classes and lineages are just aesthetics and the player is never really challenged, or games like Animal Crossing, but not Dragon Age.

Or maybe they never actually cared about the fandom and only wanted to reach a whole new audience.

The Ghilan'nain fight... 🤬

Rant incoming:

I get it.

We're not ready, but making me spend almost the whole damn fight dodging and not even TRYING to damage Ghilan'nain when killing her was the bloody goal of this particular mission was needlessly annoying.

And then it wasn't even a REAL fight. Waves of enemies just strong enough that I have to waste more than one meteor on them, stupid tracking Emissary attacks that seem to ignore all my defenses if they touch me (so I had to use potions for the first time in the last 25 levels), and once everyone is finally free of the stupid Blight tentacles, it goes right to a cutscene?!

I wanted to at least drop a few meteors on her, too.

There's difficulty that requires strategy, and then there are choices that just make a fight stupid.

That was a stupid, stupid, stupid, STUPID fight.

[Now I've typed the word stupid so many times that it looks misspelled 😤]

I just found out how Dorian looks like in Veilguard.

I am not well. I don't think I can recover from this. I'm reeling.
