The Western Veil Nebula
The Veil Nebula is interstellar debris from a very large star that violently exploded as a supernova about 15,000 years ago. This photo captures the leading shockwave as it continues to expand.
Astronomers call this Supernova Remnant the “Cygnus Loop”, because it is generally circular and viewed in the constellation of Cygnus the Swan. It is nearby at only 2,400 light years, and situated right in our own galactic spiral arm, making our image very crowded with nearby stars.
In this photo, we are looking at the outer edge of the Cygnus Loop debris field that appears facing towards the west. Note the colours: red is hydrogen, blue suggests oxygen, and sulfur is green.
A “Supernova” explosion occurs when an older star depletes fuel and begins to falter at generating a strong stellar wind. As the outward-push falters, gravity causes the aging star to catastrophically implode as a supernova. Indeed, the colours of blue and green suggest the presence of heavier elements, oxygen and sulphur, as formed in the core of older stars.
I photographed the Western Veil Nebula from my garden in Strasbourg France on a single night in August 2024. This is an ensemble of 80 photos, where each was a 3 minute exposure (4 hours of Astrophotography).

Veil Nebula - Wikipedia
The veil nebula is 110 light-years across, covering six full moons in the sky, seen from Earth, and resides about 2,100 light-years away in the constellation Cygnus the Swan.

Cygnus Loop - another wonderful (and frustrating) collaboration with @bostronomy. A combined 16.5 hours collected by both of us over a period of a month and a half. Took another month and a half to find a way to stack, process and edit in a way that felt acceptable . 122 x 300s (my data) Radian Raptor 61 Canon EOS Ra Optolong L-eNhanced . 76 x 300s (Bostronomy's ) data RedCat 51 ZWO asi2600mc Optolong L-eNhanced . Images were calibrated, stacked and pre-processed in Astro Pixel Processor. APP enables the stacking of data taken from different focal lengths and cameras. Final image was color calibrated in Siril, along with minor background balancing. Final (and most) processing in Photoshop . . . #astronomy #astrophotography #OPTeam #myOPTgear #highpointscientific #agenaastro #earliestlight #astromaniacmag #astrophoto #cygnusloop #Cygnus #veilnebula #westernveil #easternveilnebula #milkyway #supernova #cosmos #Nebula #galaxy #stars #nightsky #rhodeisland #newengland #photography #apod #nasa #ig_astrophotography #space #canonphotography #zwoasi (at Providence, Rhode Island) https://www.instagram.com/p/CUAJ1GnrR5J/?utm_medium=tumblr
Cygnus Loop (Veil Nebula) Comprised of the Eastern Veil, Western Veil, Pickering's Triangle and more, the Cygnus Loop is a large supernova remnant located in the constellation... Cygnus (go figure!) This is still a work in progress with me wanting to at least double the amount of data that I have right now plus potentially adding my data with other's as a collaboration. Personally, this has been the most challenging data to process, mainly due to the amount of stars and faint dust in the field! Now, just need those pesky clouds to go away! . 72 x 300s (6/12 & 7/10) Dark, flat, dark flat, and bias frames 800 ISO - Bortle 8 . NGC 6960 is called the Veil Nebula. It is a prominent part of a vast super nova remnant called the Cygnus Loop. It is 2,400 light years distance. The supernova was a star 20 times more massive than the Sun which exploded between 10,000 and 20,000 years ago. I photographed the Veil Nebula in October 2021 at the AstroFarm dark sky location, Confolens, Poitou-Charentes France. #veilnebula #ngc6960 #cygnusloop #supernovaremnant #astrophotography #astrophotographie #astronomyphotography #astronomy #astronomie #astronomiefrance (at Astrofarm) https://www.instagram.com/p/CU774goIT_9/?utm_medium=tumblr
