First Indian queen to fight against British- Velu Nachiyar . . Velu Nachiyar, from Tamil Nadu, was the first Indian queen to fight and triumph against the British. She did this in 1780, 77 years before the First War of Independence. Popularly known as ‘veeramangai’ (brave woman), she also devised the first recorded suicide bombing in history, with her Dalit commander-in-chief Kuyilli. 1780 was the year Velu Nachiyar bravely defeated the British in a brilliantly formulated coup. Her intelligence gathering agents found out where the British had stored their ammunition. A suicide attack was then devised to destroy all of it. Kuyili, the commander-in-chief, gallantly volunteered to carry out the suicide mission. She doused herself in ghee and set herself on fire before jumping into the ammunition store, destroying every last bit of it. . . This woman is one of my role models. . Looking at this right now and getting to know her courageous journey made me feel hopeful and sometimes do envy that I was robbed of all these powerful women when I was growing up in other side of the world. . Or my media and society FAILED to educate me on amazing strong women, human who is doing something to the society without the agenda of power or religion. . Because my society is more keen on teaching me about #kannagi instead of #velunachiyar coz she fit the ffing perfect narratives of powerful woman TO men, how they want women to be portrayed + the doomed cast system. . And still my "AsianCulture" dictates women to be passive coz it's easy to worship you or make you a second class citizen and servent, but difficult to ACCEPT you as an equal, NO, coz even when put you in pedestal you will be objectifyed. . But #TimesUp already. Even when I dislike Western culture crawling into some part of my community, am glad at least now my future generations can have better role models than just a beautiful object whose sole purpose is to be an obedient daughter, loyal wife and a nurturing mother. . Just coz it's old doesn't mean it's right. Let us start fixing the mistakes of history.
