Mountain lion cubs are born with spotted coats to help them hide from predators while their mother is hunting. When these kittens grow up, they will measure about 6'9-7'10 from nose to tail tip and weigh between 75 to 159lb. Pound for pound, cougars are some of the strongest predators and can take down prey many times their size, from wild horses and deer to full grown bull elk. Masters of stealth and ambush hunting, cougars can leap up to 40 ft horizontally and 18 feet vertically.

Despite their size and power, they are not considered proper "big cats" because they lack the specialized hyoid apparatus that allows leopards, jaguars, tigers, and lions to roar. Cougars growl, hiss, chirp, and purr instead.
