While she considers ambition as a defining trait to be something she shouldn’t demonstrate as a woman, Mairead has her own ambitions. 

The most important ambition of hers is to have and maintain a job in civil service, something no one in her family has ever done (aside from her sister, but that ended badly, and no one talks about it anymore), and she sees it as the farthest anyone in her family has managed to go within respectable fields.

Her older sister chides her for her lack of “real ambition,” and while Mairead is sure she is ambitious, she refuses to acknowledge ambition as a defining trait of hers.
