“‘Away’,” she echoed, laughing despite herself, “Is that Midgardian slang for dying and being reborn a child?“ But he was a man grown now, so there really wasn’t much of an excuse left on his part or hers. Just his presence made a old familiar warmth spread through her, that thrill of closeness that she’d missed for so long. With more courage than she knew she had, she looked over at him. There were changes from the man she’d known, but his eyes… his eyes were the same. That almost made it harder. 

Sigyn looked away again.

This was why she’d rehearsed, for fear that the flutter of her heart would chase away any thoughts from her mind. “They called me a fool when I wept for you. And fool I was, for I ought to have had more faith you’d find a way to live… I don’t think that’s what they meant.” She went back to twisting at her skirt. She’d prayed to the Norns day and night to return her husband, yet such pleas were never granted as one expected. “Fortunate I didn’t put a dagger through my heart to join you in Hel, I would have been called a fool there too.” I considered it. There was a sharpness to her voice, a bit of anger, towards him, towards herself for loving him. And anger strongest at all of Asgardia for judging her love, for it was never to so much as falter. Not that she’d allowed them to taunt her without consequence, she was the wife of mischief, after all, and perfectly capable of a little chaos of her own. She liked to think he’d be proud. “Did you ever mean to come back for me? And answer honestly. If that face is anything like the last, I will know the mark of a lie on it.”

❛   Something like that.   ❜      And he can’t say he didn’t see her because the image of him as a child would have brought back memories of their own or that he didn’t know how to approach her in such a form the truth was simple,   he didn’t see her because he was too tied up in his own little schemes and redemption to even think about her very often  -  he was never really one to make a good husband.      

It’s not shock he feels for her statement,   she was always one to love so completely,   so wholly that it’s hard to see if there would ever be any peace for her,   still he tries to apply some of his own sentiment to it,   as though that would somehow help.      ❛   I’m glad you didn’t.   ❜      The consequences of his actions are famously something he never factors in  -  just this large blind spot that he refuses to learn from,   his fingers in too many pies to see past any of them,   it’s not news the way he hurts so many people in the process.

That’s the all important question and there’s a lie right there,   an instinctual one that nearly rear’s it’s ugly head but he knows better than to lie to her  ( he wont do that to her ) ;   it would do nothing but hurt the both of them in the process.      ❛   One day,  perhaps  -  I stayed away for so long that it started to become easier to not return at all.   I thought of you fondly from time to time.   You will always be my wife, Sigyn,   no matter the dalliances I go through.   ❜      He holds his hand out for her,   not taking,   just waiting to see if she’ll accept anything from him after all this time,  he wont turn away from her face regardless.   There might be many differences and lifetimes of change but some things still remain the same.   And it’s almost as though he’s attempting to placate her but it’s not a conscious effort and there’s no anger that he needs to quell;   yet there’s still this underlying suspicious of it all,   not for the thought that she would plot against him but that he’s missing something,   a grander part of the picture,   maybe that’s just because he’s been gone so long.

     ━━━━ of course, a gnat can be squashed once annoying. ❛ and let you twist your tales from beneath me? lessons have been learned, loki. ❜

It’s an exaggerated gasp for the response and an expression that looks affronted by it all.      ❛   Me?  Moi?  I would never.  ❜     And there they are,  now the lies start to begin  (if all this blatant showmanship can even be counted as a real lie).      ❛   Don’t you know that I’m a changed god?   ❜      Somewhat.      ❛   Some might say a distinct improvement on my original form   ---  ❜     Now he leans closer in that way that implies a secret but is clearly too overt to be one.     ❛  ---   And that’s not just because I mixed up the outfit a little bit.   ❜     He sighs,   put upon by it all.

❛   What I’m saying is;   can’t we just get along?   Look at all the similarities we have,  you have black hair,  I have black hair.   We were both part of a little group that saved the galaxy.   -   Really the list is endless but I’ll stop there.   ❜

Loki ignores the king in favour of his own tangent,  scraping his finger against a wall to make a whole show of inspecting what comes off it.     ❛   Disgusting,  I suppose you can’t get the staff down in this pit   ----   not that I expected it to have anything on Asgards golden halls but really a bit of dusting goes a long way.    Or did you just give up when you saw this place for what it truly is?   A little hovel on the edge of nowhere.   ❜

Sigyn begins to steps inside, but pauses on the threshold. The duality of his greeting stung at her heart and at her resolve. “Don’t. If it concerns you, I haven’t come to drag you back to Asgardia… or coax you, or beg you.” 

Now she stepped inside, setting herself down on a sofa beside an odd little box with buttons that when she happened to brush against one of those buttons made the dull mirror on the opposing wall come to life. She paused, and uncertainly put the odd little box out of reach. 

Clearing her throat, she dragged her attention from the commercial that had now began to run a jingle, and looked back to her husband. “Is not a wife entitled to see her husband? Or is that not what you consider me to be any longer?” She regretted that last as soon as it had left her mouth, and looked away. “I only mean… I love you, Loki. In whatever incarnation of you may come, I love you. As always I have. And I stand by you still, I am your friend. As always I have been. And I…“ The moving mirror had begun to display a play, it’s characters shouting crassly at each other before a battle of guns began. “I… I’m sorry, I’ve rehearsed this in my head a thousand times… could you… could you make that stop, please?”

There’s a state of immediate regret for the way he taunted her;   she’s always been the last to deserve his bitter words and even with the grimace that almost forms for his lashing out there’s not apology that follows,   he’s falling into old habits that don’t even belong to him.      A gentle      ❛   No, I don’t believe you are.   ❜      Is uttered under his breath but that’s about it.

His attention is grabbed by the television  (maybe it interrupted an apology that might have came of it’s own accord),   the sudden obtrusion of noise that doesn’t belong in this reunion his focus only returning to her once she starts to talk again;   he waits,  of course,  pauses to see where this will all go,    it’s only polite to let her finish when she came all this way but the TV is intrusive and he turns it off as soon as she asks,   gently placing the remote down as though he doesn’t want anything too loud to interrupt her words again  -  she has his attention in a way she always did,   wholly and with a level of apprehension,   she’s too good for him even now   ---   and he takes a seat next to her because the standing  --  looming that he was doing just wasn’t right which is when he decides to break his own silence for a second,   one that comes with a grin.      ❛   You rehearsed what you were going to say to me?   Why dear Sigyn have I been away for so long that you feel the need to practice your gentle words?   ❜      He’s so much more formal with her around.

What a beautiful morning. The sun is shining, the vultures are crowing, and the God of Mischief has materialized in Bruce’s kitchen.

It seems it will be one of those days.

O h  she’s so smug,  taking a bite out of a waffle in a place she doesn’t belong but intruded just for the sheer affect of it all  -  it’s harmless mischief,  to bother any of the heroes with her presence alone but it pays off quite efficiently with very minimal effort.   ❛   Can’t a goddess drop by unannounced without it meaning I need something?   ❜
